I'm HIGHLY recommending Cliff Ruggles' new Q-jet book!

Couple of years ago, I had John Osborn setup a 750-cfm Qjet for my 350, and I must say that he does outstanding work at a good price. But when I swapped the 350 out for a new 464, I couldn't talk my budget manager (wife) into an 800-cfm carb, so I added an idle bypass air bleed, jetted it up a bit and have been using the 750-cfm on the new engine. It's doing well at wot, cruise, but the idle was erratic and weak - would vary between 600-750 in D, and lose 100-150 rpm going into gear. And the off-idle transition was sometimes seamless, sometimes not. This is with a TA212 cam making 15 inches vacuum at 700 rpm in neutral.

I got Cliff's book, and it's got a LOT of good info on the idle circuits, from how to remove the idle tubes (which I've never seen anywhere else) to sizing the tubes, air bleeds, idle restrictions, and mixture screw holes. There are three 'recipes' for idle-side stuff, along with some pretty good info on main jetting and rod setup.

Based on the book and an emailed question to Cliff, I shrank the lower air bleeds from .080 to .070, and opened up the mixture screw holes from .081 to .090 - and the effect is dramatic! Now it's idling at a rock-solid 650 rpm in N, 600 in D, and is idling so strong that it's going almost hard into gear - may lower the idle another 50-75 rpm.:TU: Plus, the off-idle transition is seamless and feels nice and strong.

Between the Doug Roe book and Cliff Ruggles' new one, you've got enough info for just about anybody to calibrate their Q-jet!

Oh yeah, plus if you have any questions you can ask the Cliff and/or the guys over at Performance Years Forum (Pontiac site), or you can check out Cliff's company's website and email him direct like I did - just be patient, it'll take a coupla days for him to reply.

Again, I'm giving Cliff and his book Two Thumbs Up. :TU: :TU:

I know I am not on the Buick band wagon but we share a lot, I know Cliff personally and yes he is back logged. His work and experience is above all and he is willing to share his tricks in this book. We made over 600HP on my 505 Pontiac with a Q-JET. See youtube.com search for GTO Cuda' race to see how it runs. One thing that also is nice you can call him personally and discuss applications and technical help.
    Thank you,
    Russ

I'm very impressed with Cliff's replies to me via email, and his postings over on the Pontiac board. It shows me that the BOP world is much much closer in heart/mind than most any other group of gearheads - a great bunch of helpful folks!
