Hey guys, the other day I was in my local farm supply store[tractors supply] and I discovered that a muffler for a John Deere tractor was in fact a good performance muffler. It has big inlets, big outlets, straight thru design, oval shape ,thick heavy metal, welded at the seams about 22 in. long. I bought one and put it on the wifes olds bravada and it sounded good, kind of trucky but not real loud. I liked it. Best of all it only cost $38.00 Doc
tractor mufflers back in high school (1964) , for a couple of years , we owned a hillman sedan . little 4 cylinder car that would rev like crazy , with 4 on the tree . anyhow , the muffler rotted out & the cost of a real replacement muffler wasr over $60, a lot of money back then . well my dad got looking around & checked the inlet/outlet sizes on our 8N ford tractor muffler . correct size if u installed it backwards . $8 later , he installed the new 8N muffler & man did it sound good . a cheap effective flow through muffler with lots of noise .
In high school I had a 77 F-150 with a early 70's 302 cannot remember the year, and a three on tree. I used mufflers for a Farmall H, worked for awhile but just did not last long, maybe 3 months if I remember correctly. I don't think they are made strong enough for cars, or maybe it is just the way I drove. John
I am completely convinced that the J/D muffler will hold up. the thing was made of metal heavy enough to weld on. Doc
Oddly enough, I was looking at tractor mufflers the other day. Most of the ones I saw looked like a toughened up version of the ubiquitous cheap glasspack. Didn't see any on a 3" pipe though. - Freed
I understand, out of about 20 mufflers this was the only oval shaped one in the bunch , the pn was a tractors supply no. i dont have a clue what the j/d no is, but it is definitly a good muffler. It eaven has a sq. 4 bolt flange on the inlet end. By the way my son works for the UP rr. there in K C Doc
Back in College (late 50's early 60's) we all ran old chevy truck mufflers turned around backwards with turn downs. It really enhanced the lopey idle, and had a nice snarl to it, especially when you blipped the throttle. I think that the mufflers sold for around $5 back then... My 57 Special was so loud with these guys on it, I put the tailpipes back on and added resonators...It still sounded good.
