My 69 Skylark is starting to make a low whirring sound near the front when I accelerate, and it goes away as I slow down. Is this the wheel bearings or ?

Jeez could be anything, but I'd say off the top of my head it could even be an exhaust leak...my car used to make a snarling noise when I had iron manifolds that was from a crack in the driver's side exhaust manifold. If you eliminate that possibilty, my off-the-cuff guess would be water pump, if the noise has a churning-type quality. I had an odd sound once that drove me nuts- a tag on a fuel line had torn halfway off and was getting whapped by the balancer as it spun around!

It's easy to check the wheel bearings- if you have any doubt about them, you should yank the wheels off and check them out
