Grr... why won't drum fit over new brakes shoes?

Discussion in 'The whoa and the sway.' started by BamaWildcat, Mar 19, 2005.

  1. So... I put new brakes shoes on the back of one side of the Wildcat today. The brakes shoes are exactly like the ones I took off, and I have before and after pictures. Everything looks correct, but the drum will absolutely not fit over the new shoes. The self adjuster is adjusted all the way in, and the only change I can find is the thickness of the pads, but you figure with 41 years of wear, the drum would fit on anything. So, here are some pictures. Help. It looks like the shoes shift everything up and over.

    Help :Do No:

When that's happened to me in the past it was ALWAYS tight parking brake cable adjustment.......back it off a lot to be sure, and after your adjusters are set correctly, only then tighten it back again. And make sure the cables aren't sticking. :bglasses:

    Joe,
Sorry the pics weren't up when I posted my first reply. There should be a short shoe and a long shoe for both sides. Looks like you may two long shoes on there.

    Tim and Rex,

Thank you for pointing out at least one problem I have. I just double checked, and I have two LONG shoes (I guess Primary) installed on the car, and two shoes sitting in the box to be installed on the other side of the car that happen to be short

So I have found at least one problem. Ony bummer is I have to wait to tackle it until tomorrow.

You prolly already know this......but the long shoe goes toward the rear and the short one goes toward the front. :Smarty:

  13. Actually, I did not know it. Thanks for posting so I didn't have to dig out the FSM.

You are talking to the same guy that didn't know you had to take a nut off before the front drums would come off.

I can run laps around most people with electrical, but brakes consistantly kick my butt. When I first brought the car home [from the junkyard] I put on a new master cylinder, rebuilt all the wheel cylinders (my wife really appreciated having a bunch of wet brake stuff sitting around her kitchen floor), and put on new hoses. I didn't change the pads, as they looked good, but I had a pulling to the right. Once I bought all new pads, I found out my front pads were near new, but my back pads were almost down to the rivets.

Some brake reliners will shim the linings for people that turn the drums. The box is usually stamped .030- .o6o oversize. You may have a set of these.

  16. Well Gentlemen, it turned out the primary and secondary shoe thing was what held my drums from going back on. Once I put a long and short shoe on instead of two long shoes, the drum went back on.

I do have a pronounced dragging, but I assume as others have mentioned the e-brake needs adjustment. Nevertheless, the drums are on and I am happy!

Glad you got it working Joe! :beer

I'm just concerned about the tight parking brake......that can cause your self adjusters to keep tightening........I had that happen to me long time ago on a Dodge. It kept coming back with locked rear wheels (and consequently warped drums from the heat) :Dou:
