Okay, I tried very hard not to have to post this thread or have to ask this question. But I checked the archives and all the threads I found say to check the archives. In other words, I never found a good answer. So how does one achieve the semi-flat black found on the GSX stripes? A paint store guy said that black base coat without clear would probably be close, but would not guarantee the results or longevity of the paint. Another idea I had was to get some Super Bee matte black from Year One (big bux!).
>>>Black paint code - 898-98811<<<< What brand? Does that include the amount of gloss or just the color?
A friend is just now painting a clone GSX car. The black paint for the hood and stripes is Dupont HHM 6400. Called Hot Rod Black. Its a Urethane. The catalyst is HHA 6405. A quart of color along with the catalyst was just under $100, and should be enough to do the hood and all the stripes. It covers nice and is an excellent match to original. We had a real time trying to find the exact match for the QQ color. But we finally came up with the base/clear formula. There is a local supplier that can still get the lacquer so we had him mix a quart of QQ color, sprayed a test panel and compared to my original paint GSX. Exact match. Lays so flat and covers so nice. Barely needs any buffing. So we had that mixed in Dupont base/clear. As he's going to be using the car quite a bit on the street, and in lots of hot weather sunshine. There were a lot of "close" formulas, but they weren't close enough. I'll be going lacquer with my car when it gets redone. Its a more original look.
