This is a question for all those that trailer their vehicle to car events. I am considering doing just that. Right now, I stay in my home city with my car, and participate in car events in town. I am purchasing a motor home, and am thinking about going to events in other areas of the country. My question is regarding trailers. I can buy a car dolly for under $1000; a flat deck car trailer for around $2500. I don't think I want to consider a covered trailer as the cost is probably too much. Do any of you haul your ride using a dolly or car trailer? Do you put some kind of car cover on it to keep the vehicle from getting dirty or covered in bugs? Any advice/experiences would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim
If you put a cover on it during transit, the paint will get rubbed. So you need to tow with no cover on the car. It is best to have one with an air dam on the front. The Featherlite I have has this nose on it but they are all aluminum and relatively expensive trailers. For ease of loading I think a tilt back design may be the way to go.
you know what scares me about towing with an open car trailer? getting caught in a HAIL STORM. have you ever seen what hail can do to a paint job?
Skip the car dolly buy a trailer. Im not even going to waste time telling you how bad the idea of a dolly is.................
Agree. As far as the trailer, it depends on how particular you are about your car's appearance and how much energy you have. If you don't mind the car getting slopped up in the rain (because it WILL rain) and can clean it all back up, then a light open trailer is fine. If you are like me, and hate cleaning and don't really have the time for it, I would encourage you to look for an enclosed trailer. You could probably find a used one reasonably priced, especially these days. (Depends a little bit on your tow vehicle, too). K
I should also point out that your are "bucking the trend" here. Most folks that have been traveling are staying home now due to fuel costs... K
Go to www.racingjunk.com. You should be able to pick up a slightly used trailer for a good price. Also, check with some local trailer dealers. I am sure that they are looking to make a deal with trailers they have in stock. And going back to what has been said before, if you are going enclosed, do not get anything less that 5200# axles under it!!!
On longer trips, I put mine on my 18' trailer. I just don't want to get stuck anywhere in case something breaks that can't easily be fixed. I picked up my trailer on ebay for $1500. It's a Big Tex style trailer with side steps, a compartment in the floor, and ramps that slide in underneath from the rear. I love it. Here's a pic of similar to what I have. But mine has dual axles obviously.
