What do you guys use to port your heads? I bought a dremel and spent the extra dough for a good one only to find out that they don't make the tools I need for porting that fit it. All the porting tools I can find have a 1/4 inch shank which is too big for the dremel. Do any of you know where I can get burrs, drums ect. to fit the 1/8 collet or do I need to spend yet more money to buy another die grinder.:Dou:

    Thanks

As far as I know you need a die grinder. The good thing is that you can get a pneumatic (sp) one for around $20 (I have a Cambell Hausfeld from Home Depot). Good luck finding a good set of burrs for that price. I think they sell for $39 at summit racing.

i like the 90 degree die grinder. burs are pricey but you get what you pay for, but the cheap die grinders last a long time just keep it lubed

I shouldv'e clarified on the burs I used. They are the long shank ones (about 6 inches). I'm sure the shorter ones are less expensive. You should also get the abrasives set. I got that from summit as well.

    Good Luck!!

I bought 1/8 in shank stones at my local welding gas supplier..they were a nice fine blue color stone ...also used some brown coarser stones from sears dremel connection..

since i had an air die grinder I also used a carbide burr to cut off the 'gross ' amount when I gasket matched the exhaust ports, but used the stones for the fine detail work and final shaping.

like my buddy told me...its easier to go slow than it is to buy new heads after you grind too much away..you could do it all with a dremel ...it will just go a little slower.. I would guess I spent 10 hours or so doing 2 world products heads for my nova..

    havn't done the 455 's yet...

this spring maybe...unless I find a money tree...

good luck, its a messy dusty noisy job, but great results for a little work..

I bought my burrs through Harbor Freight tools. Can shop online. Very reasonable prices. Quality good enough for more than one set of heads. Mr. Gasket makes a head porting kit that has everything you'd need but the burrs. I didn't even use all the stuff up on one set of heads.

I don't think a Dremel tool can stand up to the torture like a cheap die grinder (also available at Harbor Freight). I bought all my air tools (except my impact wrench) at Harbor freight more than a decade ago. For a home garage user they are fine and very inexpensive. Only had to send one tool back.
