Heater box question

on the 71-72 GS/Skylark I have noticed some cars have, and some do not have a screw on the inside part of the heater box going forward though the firewall. It goes though the hole on the outboard end of the heater box, near the top.

I was just wondering if this was plant only thing as my two fremont cars had it but my flint convertible does not and my flint stage 1 has a/c. I cannot find anything about this in my assembly manuals.

Its kinda nice because you can leave the nut off the one stud going through the firewall so if you ever have to get at the heater core you won't have to pull the fenderwell, the screw helps support the area.

    Anyone??

MIne had it - but I didn't know it when we changed the heater core. We just pulled on it until the box came off, only to learn we stripped it out. It hasn't caused any problems, though.

I'm not sure where my 'Lark came from.

could the screw be used like an alignment pin for the heater core ?

No, its in the outside part of the case...the core is held in with clips and the case is aligned to the firewall by the built in studs...I was thinking it may have been used just to hold the assembly in place until the nuts for the heater box on the front part of the firewall were installed.
