I had the Skylark on front jack stands for a couple days. Today i noticed about 1/2 qt of transmission fluid has leaked from the area where the driveshaft connects to the tyranny. Is the just a seal?

    Thanks

    tubecatgs Finally a 4 speed......

Most likely the seal but doesn't surprise me at that angle.

My 69 did that, though not that much, when I had the front on jack stands for a couple weeks. I did not do anything about it except put it back on the ground, and it has not leaked since. On my car it looked like it came from a very small hole in center of the transmission yoke.

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

Tailshaft is above fluid level line when car is normal stance, but with converter drain-back and angle of the tailshaft being down, can put the fluid level above the tailshaft and it will seep. And older seal may seep more due to being less flexible.

If you are not losing fluid during normal driving, don't be concerned.

The seal can be replaced, if it is leaking badly by getting the car level, or even "nose down" and pulling the drive shaft (mark the rear to the pinion yoke, and the front with a chalk line or dab of paint on the output shaft splines so you can get it back where it was.)

Pulling the seal can be done by carefully driving the edge of the seal collar in (1) (around approx 2 inches) and then angle so you are driving it rearward (2) and out of the tailhousing.

Clean the area with degreaser, and use a block of wood and pall peen or deadblow to drive in the new seal.
I do them dry, some folks use Right Stuff or Shellac sealer.

Thanks. It never leaked when level. I'll check it again when I let it down.

mine too with new seals. Over the winter i think it looses like a quart or more because of drain back. If it's not the rear seal (which is a static seal not under pressure) could be speedo seals, or shift shaft seals all on the low side of trans. you can chase it but as already said clean it up if not leaking when driving or sitting overnight for example it no real worry.
