I have a 1968 Skylark 4 door custom hardtop with 74K miles and a 350-4. My BOP rear started making rumbling noises on Friday. It still moves but just driving it a couple of blocks started taxing the engine into overheating. Also, for the last couple of weeks, when I first start out, there was a rubbing sound coming from the rear like a tire rubbing on metal. I know that you can convert it the BOP to a posi and such with about $800 worth of parts with some higher level mechanical knowledge, but is there any other alternative? I don't want to double the cost of my car just because the rear is bad. Please help me with any ideas you might have. Any suggestion is appreciated.

You could just try and find an open rear out of a wrecking yard car.

Or maybe you're close to a member who has an open rear, they don't need, that'll swap in drum to drum.

Where are you located, that may help your cause?
