Bad fuel pump would cause leanness. Just a thought, but you don't have an aftermarket electric pump, do you? They can put out more psi that the Q-jet needs or wants, and will overpower the float and flood out.

is the fuel filter in place? if not, trash could get between the needle and seat and cause flooding.

One thing to consider is the possibility that the float itself has been damaged. These phenolic floats have a coating similar to lacquer, maintaining its liquid proof status. If this coating has been damaged, it is possible that the float itself will gradually soak up the fuel in the bowl, making it heavy. The resulting weight will make fuel control erratic. Under these situations, high demand conditions may not adversely affect fuel handling, but low demand conditions, such as idle will cause a gradual flooding condition. Excessive fuel pressure can cause a similar condition. Food for thought. Ray
