Im attaching a picture of what I need help with, my a/c line gets cold up to a certain point then it stops where I think it enters the evaporator. Can somebody help?

I believe that is your POA valve. Sometimes when the system is low on freon or your charging the sytem it will freeze up. If it freezes up while charging shut it off let it warm up and then add some more freon. It could also be a bad POA valve.

Yup, that's the POA valve on the OUTLET side of the evaporator, it (among other things) keeps enough refriderant in the evap to keep it from freezing up. In many conditions moisture or frost on that line would be normal.

    How is your a/c working?

Seriously, before you do anything to it like adding refrigerant, put a set of gauges on it and post the ambient and vent temperatures, and high-side / low-side pressures. Doors open, system on MAX (recirc), fan on HI, engine at 1500-2000rpm, fan blowing at the condenser.

www.ackits.com has an awesome forum with a TON of info on car a/c systems (great products/prices too if you end up needing something).

The air coming out of the vent is not even cool. I made sure the blend door was in the right position for max cooling and the fan set to max. Wouldnt the part of the line thats coming out of the evaporator be cold as well? I will have to check the pressures after work today hopefully I can still find my old set of gauges.

Yup, sounds like it's low on refrigerant (R12?). But still need to put gauges on it and see.

I forget exactly how the POA works, but iirc what's likely going on is that it's trying to keep the evaporator full, and so instead of the cooling happening right after the Expansion Valve on the inlet side of the evap, it's happening at the POA valve - which is why it's frosting up.

I'm curious about the pressure in the system when it's at rest, before the compressor has run. Should be somewhere around 100-120 psi or so, if I recall from my old R12 days.

Found my old gauges, lowside was 15 high side right around 165 yesterday afternoon was probably 80 degress. So I added more R-12 low side reading 32 forgot what the highside was reading but air coming out of vent was nice and cold.:TU: I havent done this type of work in a long time, its funny how you tend to forget things:Dou: Thanks for the advice guys.

Samething happend to mine years a go. I read article that if this happens samll expansion valve that looks like small flying saucer with long coil coming out of it going to tar wrap is no good. I changed it and problem stopped.

Yup, you were low. 32 is good for the low side, and as long as the high side wasn't up over 275 or so, you're good.

Might want to get ahold of a 'sniffer' and try to find out where the R12 is leaking from. If you're lucky it's a slooooowwwwww one. :beers2:
