So, the Galaxie is running good, I have the correct carb on it, the choke works properly, yadda yadda... The correct carb is ONLY 480CFM for 428 cubic inches. Ridiculous! So, Sunday I re-gasketed my trusty ol' 69 428SCJ 735CFM Holley and installed it. Talk about a change of attitude!! It went from bubbles the chimp to a freaking gorilla! I'm STILL smiling!! Can't we make this carb legal? I mean hey, its a carb for a 428 ford, right?? please, please, pleeeeeease?????? :Brow:

I have noticed with some of the older Ford trucks i have ran that there were big differences in carbs depending on yrs and engine size.

  3. Is there nothing that can be done within the rules to improve your factory carburetor? 480cfm is a joke!

X2, i agree. My off road truck had just a mild 302 with stock exhaust manifolds and an edelbrock 4v intake. What was done to the engine i do not know but it was a newer engine with a one piece rear main seal. A friend of mine gave me the engine when i hurt my 390FE, he bought it from another fella who claimed it was a fresh build and came out of an 82 full size Bronco. I dropped it in the truck, stuffed the new 600cfm Holley off road truck avenger carb from the 390FE on the 302 and ran it. All i can say is the engine did not have the torque of the 390 but it sure had planty of power. I ran the 9" lincoln locked rear with 4.10 gears in it, 38.5X14.5 super swamper SX's, the 302 with a NP-435 4spd behind it. The 390 would break the tires loose with ease, the 302 i would just pull out, rev it up and dump the clutch and hang on. Like the 390 once the tires were loose i could burn up the road in 2nd and bark them in 3rd.

480cfm for a 428FE is a joke, that engine stock will handle over 800cfm with no issues.

Who states what carb you have to run? DMV for smog reasons? If so run the 480 for the test/inspection and swap them back around for the rest of the yr. You cant tell me these young cops these days know what carb belongs on that car and what does not.

I think they're talking about the racing rules for Pure Stock Drags.

Yeah, its just for the pure stocks. The C9AF-9510-U Holley will be on it all summer until then. Its a friggin blast and seems perfect with the first setup i put in it (jets, accelerator pump cam and secondary spring).
