Well,I'll clarify,I won't weld it myself  .I do machine work for some of my friends/coworkers and they in turn do welding, intricate sheetmetal work, etc. for me.I've been taking some welding lessons on and off with one of my coworkers while I show him some basics on the lathe and the mill when we are not too busy at work.Management is ok with it because it enhances everyone's skills. It pays to have a skilled trade even on these "hi tech" days :bglasses: .

So, does the BBC drop-base lid allow the use of a 1/2" or 1" spacer and a 3" element w/ a TA SP1, Holley and stock hood??

Drop base air filter w/ SP-1 and spacer

    Bob,

That is the $64,000 question, and I would like to know the answer myself. I bought the drop base, plan on using a 3" filter (it looks like you must use a filter of at least 3" w/ the drop base), and I have Bulldog heads, which are .300" taller than stock. I'm pretty sure a 1" spacer is out of the question, but I would like to run the Barry Grant 1/2" spacer for my Q-jet.

I hope someone has experience with this and can help out with an answer.

One thing you have to remember about these 36 year old cars is that they are not all the same. What fits my 70 may not fit your 70. I think on my car I have lost 1/2 an inch due to old body bushings. As the cars are modified, repaired etc. things change. A pain in the :moonu: but that's what we have to live with.

    Craig,

I'll order one tomorrow. There aren't available on eBay through "restoration-warehouse" anymore, but you can get them through Noah Performance. I already have a 1/2" spacer, so I'll see how it goes. Maybe I can pop some more freeze plugs out. :af:

the drop base drops the filter 2"

The SP-1 raises the carb pad 1 3/4" from stock.

Right now I have a 1-1/2" drop base filter housing, a 3" filter, Holley, TA SP1 and TA S-1 heads. If I add a 1/2" spacer, the hood hits. Judging by Stg'd 2Discover's pic, the BBC lid has much more of a drop, and if he can use a 4" filter and no spacer, I'm speculating that I (we) should be able to use at least a 1/2" spacer, maybe even a 1", with the BBC base w/ a 3" filter. :Do No: We'll see.

the BBC drop base is a total of 2" drop.

if you had your 1 1/2" fine, you could use the 2" BBC drop and use a 1/2" spacer.

I can see why this is a problem. I have a 1-3/16" base (I thought it was 1-1/2", but I just measured it). According to Summit, their largest drop is what I have. The re-pop BBC has only a 1-1/2" drop, according to Noah Perf.

Grimm amd Stg'd, you both say that the BBC one is a 2" drop. Stg'd is not a re-pop, if I read correctly. Where are you getting your info, Grimm?

The picture of Stg'd looks quite different than mine. I wonder if Noah Perf is mistaken?

I hate leaving simple HP on the table. The mystery continues...

My reproduced BBC drop base measured right at 2",I measued from a flat surface to the uppermost part of the base.

    Hector,

Where did you get your base from? I would think the measurement should be taken while the lid is on a flat surface, from the surface to the point at which the lid rests on the carb. :Smarty:

The base came from eBay from a store named Restoration something :Do No: .You are correct as to the way to measure the drop of the base and actually, that's what I meant. The actual measurement was 2" to the bottom of the lip that contacts the carburetor's flange. What I was thinking and what I wrote didn't agree :Dou: ,it's been a long night :ball: .

    Hector,

I think the person I spoke with at Noah Performance aka Restoration-Warehouse must be mistaken about the drop dimension. The lids are back on eBay and a couple of bucks cheaper than if you go through their website, so I ordered one and it'll be here in a couple of days. Thanks for the heads-up and I'll post some pics of it and of the car pulling some wheelies after adding a 1/2" spacer!

Bob,I've been thinking about this since it came back up and I believe that I paid Rest. Whse. but the package had Noah's name as the sender,go figure. Here's a picture, from the angle it may look more than 2" but it is right at 2" to the lip.

Hector, 'restoration-warehouse' is Noah Performance's handle on eBay. If you scroll down in their add on eBay, you will find this out. Thanks for the measurement!

    Tried a new element combination

    FYI

Just bought a K&N 3.5 inch filter element, tried it for fit and I can confirm it clears the hood with my 71 464 Bulldog head/SP1 combo with the 2 " drop base. As someone previously stated your motor mounts may have an effect. I consider mine average. They were replaced some while ago but have little mileage.

So those of you that want to run a .5" spacer on the SP1 and pick up the few extra HP you can, if you run the 3'' element.
