My 462 currently has a TA Sp1 intake on it and I run an open air cleaner, but my hood is a glass 3 1/2 inch cowl hood. I am swapping back to steel fenders and may install a 70 GS hood.I am either in need of a suggestion and part number for a drop air cleaner or will swap the SP1 for my B4B intake. I know the GS air cleaner wont line up but I don't want to deal with hood and cleaner interference.Does anyone have a tried and true drop base and the number of it?And,where can I buy it from?

Did you consider taking a junker stock air cleaner and cutting the bottom out of it and just using the bottom? I don't know how well this might work for you. What I do know is that I found generic aftermarket air cleaner bases would interfere with the q-jet. So I cut up a junk stock air cleaner to make my own base.

I made my own when I ran into clearance problems trying to fit one on the Riv. 0120110837c.jpg 1107101550a.jpg

Wow, I just peeked on ebay and I could probably buy 5 re-pops for what the originals are selling for. :D

I tried the L88 drop base. It wouldnt work with my QJet. If I remember right, the throttle arm and the cable bracket we're hitting the L88 base.

I thought the Edelbrock Performer intake will let you run the GS air cleaner.

I ran a sp1 with q jet factory gs hood and ram air cleaner. Use the tops of the fenders to line up the angle . The air cleaner angles up in the front so you have to bend that down more to get the right angle . Put some wood on the inside hole and support the out side . Then massage with mallet for desired depth and angle. I could not use the support bracket. Or the left lower plastic on the ram air , it hit my hei. chuck

May help if Pat mentions what carb he runs. Is it a qjet?

I run the SP1 along with my Quadrajet and AED 1000HO Double Pumper. I use a drop base air cleaner I bought at the Atlantic City Car Auction one year. Seems to me you could find them just about anywhere. I measured it once, it was 1 1/2" drop.

I had hood clearance issues with my FiTech EFI and SP1 intake until I tried this air cleaner base from Summit: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/kys-100-68826b. Cleared the Fitech fuel inlet and outlet ports and all linkage and solved my hood clearance problem.

I went to that air cleaner base about a month after installing my FiTech system a few years ago. If you are running a std 3 inch tall air filter pull the assembly off and look/feel inside from the inlet side to see just how much clearance you have for air to actually get to go the throttle body. This new base gave me about 3/8 of an inch extra hood clearance but I ended up using some adhesive foam to "shim" the filter and lid up about 3/16 as the lid was nearly laying against the drop base dome..

Good tip, Ken. I guess it depends on what lid you are using, as I have a good 3/4" clearance between the lid and the base.

I've been using the Corvette/Chevelle style air cleaner bases on Buicks for over 25 years. Just have to know which one to use. For all your Quadrajet carbs use the Paragon Reproductions #2091. They make the #1008 for the Holley carbs (L88-LT1). Paragon has the manufacturing rights to theses bases as well as others so you can go right to the source. They offer the lids as well.
Often on non-Corvette applications I remove the breather tube and weld or silver solder a small metal disc in its place. Then just use a valve cover mounted breather.

What height filter would you suggest? That looks like a good bit of drop to help out my situation. I have a K&N 3 inch ,4 inch and I am removing the 6 inch filter.

I use the 4" K&N filters. Not a problem with the SP1. When I get home I'll post photos of it on my car. In the meantime I'll put up a few photos of the Paragon setup that I just took of my Small Bock Corvette.

Not only does the it fit with a 4" filter but I had forgotten that at the same time I also stacked a 1" Moroso carb spacer along with an aluminum heat insulator plate. Everything cleared with no problems.

I have a like new 4in K-N sitting in my garage that I briefly ran when I had a B4B on my car 15years ago. Would love to give that aanother go if I knew this base would work with the FiTech.
