I need a Muncie Trans Decoded

Discussion in 'U-shift em' started by Krayzie949, Jan 27, 2007.

    Im looking at buying a Muncie Trans from a board member here. It is out of a 1969 427 Corvette. He sent me some pictures of the numbers on the tranny and here they are:

    P9R12

    3857584 (tailhousing)

    9W335681 (VIN?)

    If I'm correct the 3857584 number given is of the tailhousing. From what I've been reading there should be two more numbers. One for the main case and one for the side cover. I'm looking at buying a transmission that has the same set of gears that my GS has now and I think this transmission may have them, however, I don't think I can tell for sure until I get these other numbers? Am I correct? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    P= muncie
    9= 1969
    R= month- October
    12= day
    ----is there either an A,B or C after the 12?

    9W= 1969, W= plant built. There should another number infront of the '9'. If it is a 4, then it is a Buick......

    3857584 1966 – 1970 Passenger side speedo, 27 spline

    George,

    The numbers that I gave are shown on the transmission. I was told it's from a corvette and thats fine with me. Im just trying to find out if it has the same gearing that is in my GS now. Thanks.

    Brian,
    If you want to know "if it has the same gearing that is in my GS now" then you need to post what letter follows the "P9R12" code. That will tell you the gear ratios.

    Duane,

    Can you PM me your email address. I will email you the pictures as I cannot post them. I cannot see anything after that number.
