I have a 67 electra conv. and I am having problems with the ignition system. WHen I turn the key I get all the lights on the dash and my headlights even work, but the car won't even turn over a little. I had my battery tested and its good and I replaced the starter because it was old anyway, but that hasn't done anything. I don't if it's the wiring or a switch or something. I wanted to know if any one knew anything.! thanks

    Andy,
Sounds like a problem in the wiring to the starter. You've checked the battery and the starter, wiring is the only thing left. On the starter solenoid, there is a large post where the + battery cable and main harness connect. There are two smaller connections on either side of the large post. One is the "S" or switch terminal, usually a purple wire, the other is the "R" or resistance terminal, usually a yellow wire. Make sure these are not mixed up. Looking from the front of the car, the switch terminal is to the right of the + cable connection. It should receive 12 volts when the ignition switch is in the crank position. Check for that with a test light or voltmeter. Hope that helps.

Andy, there are 2 red wires that run from your engine harness to the BIG positive connection on your selenoid, at the end of these 2 red wires are smaller pieces of wire crimped and wrapped called "fuseable links" one controlls the power to run the car, the other is your headlights, check them to make sure they are not melted, i had a similar problem a long time ago, and traced it back to the Fuseable links. Good luck:TU:

    Thanks,
turns out that your were right, I had reversed the resistance ,and switch wires because they were both black.
I have a new ball of wax though, I got the starter to turn over but the engine desen't want to fire. I checked the distributer, and spark plugs , and they were sparking and the carburetor is getting fuel, but the engine won't fire. :( :af: , the bottom of the carburetor is leaking gas on both sides and the front if you are looking from in front of the car. We also did a no, no and poored about a cup of gas into the carburetor and it still wouldn't fire. We are not carburetor experts and are stumped, so any ideas would help, Thanks

    Andy,
If the carb is leaking gas, it may be flooding out. Dumping in more gas just makes that worse. Pull the plugs and make sure they are dry and clean. Then have the carb rebuilt or take it apart yourself and check the float, needle and seat for dirt and or sticking. Are you sure of the distributor position/initial timing? Good luck.
