In this case, it didn't take a Hemi

My friend sent me an e-mail a while back...He was so excited that his granddaughter blasted a 14.1 second pass down the quarter mile! I assumed it was in his factory stock 70 GS Stage-1 (AC, 3:42 posi).

    Wrong!!!

It was in her factory stock Honda Accord 2.0T. Yeah, the front-wheel drive, 4 door sedan, with a turbo 4 banger, AC, power everything, sun/moon roof, leather interior, the kitchen sink, etc. o_O

I thought my friend was joking about the Honda being factory stock; turns out he wasn't. My local Honda tech said: "14.1, bone stock, for THAT car? Sure, but that's old news. If you want to go fast, get a Tesla."

    The changing of the guard.:(

But which car gets more thumbs up and smiles? On the topic of old V new, I'm old enough to remember reading a late 1960's article comparing the performance o a Cortina GT to a 1920's Bugatti. Near enough the same distance in time there compared to the Accord & Stage 1.

My daughters first car was a 01 Accord with the big V6 and that was surprisingly quick.

Funny this is also being talked about here. I have the accord because my sis works at the dealership. I was horrified that it actually beat my 70 skylark, especially considering it's a front wheel drive 4 banger. This is something I will never share with anyone else tho. I want them to believe my buick is the fastest coolest looking car in the family lol.

Yeah, my friend is not finding any takers in his family or extended family to take over the reins of the old Buick or any vintage car for that matter. His wife in fact prohibited the children/grandchildren from riding in the old Buick due to the lack of airbags and other modern safety equipment. She speaks from experience.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

This is the same story I went through when my first child was born. My wife informed me that my GS wasn't going to remain my daily driver with my newborn on board... Kind of a bummer. Coming back around now that the "newborn" is 17!

Also, not to minimize modern safety features, I can not tell you home many people have told me stories of how a Buick saved their life in an accident situation!

Your wife's should drive slower then if they want to be in the Buick.
I used to stand on the front seat while driving, I also shifted the gears for dad on the three on the tree cars. We would go to Barberton for chicken dinner on Sundays and we drove no faster than 30-35 mph ALL the way and it took everybit of 40 minutes to get there from Akron. If we went over 35mph my mom yelled at my dad, And we Never went on the highway there was nothing to see there.

Those Buick's are safer. that steel takes more to bend. I can push the metal in on my newer truck easily.

I'm pretty much there too! Things have kind of gone full circle in that some drive-ins that banned hotrod get-togethers over the years have loosened up a bit. Also, I remember the days when camshafts had cool names too!

    King of the Drive-in
    Hemi Killer
    Window Rattler
    3/4 Race
    Cheater

Looking to make it at least to the end of number 6.

Got nothing to prove, but happy to show 'em.

Around fast cars since before I was born.

    Geeezzzz,

I took my wife's Toyota Highlander in for some work and they had a new Hemi Challenger up on the rack. He said he needs to get this thing into the 9's to keep up with his daughter's new 4 door Tesla. I told him, "you're joking, right?" He said "No."

Hell, I'm happy if my wife's 20 year old Toyota Highlander 4 banger travels a 1/4 mile.

I will always love my 70, but my 2018 Accord 2.0t Touring with dynamic suspension is a blast. Its just a long way down anymore, so hard getting in and out of.

Nice! I was going to pick up a 2021 Accord 2.0t, but due to covid and the resulting supply chain issues, local stock was pretty slim. And what limited stock they do have is going for thousands over MSRP. I'll hold on to my 2014 Accord EXL for another year or so.

My 2004 Mustang Cobra ruined me. Sold the Stage 2 64 Skylark after a road trip to Reno. Couldn't hear the AM radio and the AC couldn't keep up with the 110* temp and sunshine through the windows while being no quicker than the Cobra. The 32 Ford /Flathead V8 changed the performance world for over a decade, but that eventually ended too. Time has marched-on and even the Stage 1 is no longer a world beater but a quaint little hot rod like Grandpa's 32 Ford was in 1970. Electric cars still suck in a lot of practical ways, but don't race a Tesla Plaid, which can be had for a lot cheaper than any other 9-second car suitable for road trips. https://electrek.co/2021/11/26/tesla-model-s-plaid-becomes-first-hit-8-second-quarter-mile/

Love my old Buicks but new tech is really something else!

My wife wanted a Tesla so I begrudgingly got her a Model Y. But now I love it. We even drove from Chicago to Florida. Its about the slowest Tesla offered and still runs in the 12’s. You like torque? Holy crap its absolutely instantaneous - I can’t imagine what the Model S Plaid feels like
