Inside a bench?

    Hi folks,
does anyone know what exactly is inside a 1967 (or any 1960ies GM) Buick front bench?
    Pictures would be perfect.
I am curious to see if there is enough meat to weld on "guardrail" to install a head rest.
    Many thanks.

Yes - I used the backs/parts from a later bench seat. Cut the track out and welded it to the 67 frame. See pic:

    Thanks Bill,

That is precisely what I intend to do.
Any pics of the bench without the cover?

No pics - a shop did the work. I might have pics of the late model bench - I'll look.

You might want to take a peek yourself and see what is in there. When I restored an older pair of bucket seats they did not have headrests, but the mounting holes were there under the upholstery.

Too late tonight, but maybe I can get you a pic of a 67 El Camino seat frame that is completely stripped in a day or two. I have one by my shop. They should be the same.

thanks. Due to cold winter time I can only take the bench apart in spring, so anything I can learn now on V8Buick is helpful to me.

Thanks Bill. I am getting a better idea now. :TU:
Those seats look less reliable than you would think. I just removed a seat from a 90ies European car and it had massive frame to keep the seat in place in case of an accident.

Buick put the massive frame under the car to keep the seat in place...lol :puzzled: Actually you're seeing the newer technology at work and the application of crumple zone safety engineering. That and air bags are keeping the death toll down on today's highways!

    Bill,

I have bought pretty much the same backplate you have there (good ol Buick for my Buick and not the European style). But how did you connect the plate with the bench itself. It looks as if the bench consists of a flimsy spring and cushion in between.
Did you weld a proper frame around everything?
    Appreciate your inspirations.

Hi Patrick - I honestly don't know - a shop did the work. Maybe he just replaced the old seat backs with the newer ones? He did not charge much so I'm sure it was not very involved.
