I'm soon going to be replacing the intake manifold on my 70 350

I have a noisy lifter/valve is this the time where I would want to replace that lifter? the engine has 138k miles on it is it worth it to find a new set of lifters entirely or is it ok to just replace the worn one.

also what is the best way to find that colapsed lifter?
it's a little noisy on the passengers side (AC box also still there grrr.)

and to remove the lifter I take it you have to remove the rocker and pull out the push rod so the question lies do i need to remove the head to get it out?
I'm not to worried about the technicality of it just looking for some pointers since i've never pulled lifters (or a head for that matter) out of a car.

Yea i know it would be nice to rebuild the whole thing since i feel that im basicly doing that backwards (started with timing chain and coverseals when doing that I should have replaced the cam then too.:Do No:

With that amount of miles on it, I would suspect more than just the lifter. I would really consider installing a new cam and all new lifters. It all depends on your budget, but I would hit it while I was there.
If it is not a daily driver, you might pull the one lifter.....I'd pull em all and inspect them...... and check for any amount of dishing, or a concave appearance. If there is an excess, it would be better to replace the cam and all the lifters together.

    Re: Re: intake and lifters

it ran beautifully quiet when i bought it (4000k ago.) i drove it on the highway for about 200 miles and noticed the tick (was exaust leak on drivers side) another 600 miles the lifter/valve noise was there.

it is a daily driver in the summer but i do have another car to fall back on (so it can be out of comission for a couple weeks if need be.

I mean if im going to replace the cam, lifters, pushrods, springs. I may as well look into getting the heads done too.

anyone have ball park numbers on having 70 heads done?
prices on both factory valves and oversized?

though if thats the case i should almost just look into rebuilding a 455 but then thats a whole nother can of worms (trans, rear end)

Nate - You might consider doing a compression test before you yank things apart. At least that way, you'll know where you stand regarding the basic condition of the engine (at least as far the the valves/seats and rings go).

I'd start with the condition of the face of each lifter and the cam lobes. If they look OK, try to check each lifter for the 'spongiest' one. Hopefully that's your culprit.

Unless you've got really bad compression or one dead cylinder or something, I'd leave the heads on! Changing cams is one thing...but once the heads come off for a valve job, you'll be thinking hmmm...may as well deglaze the cylinders and pop new rings on those pistons. Then of course...since I'm down that far - may as well have the crank polished or turned and put in new bearings! One thing leads to another!!:Brow:
