Deigo how close is that engine to top of the list for 50's HP?

Well I agree with you. I think it is too if the engine was available from the dealer or the factory for that car. I did not know it was a nascar engine.

I seem to recall that same comparison made several years ago between a 426 Hemi and a 455 Buick

The 400hp Merc was the top of the heap for the 1950's.

There was I believe a 60 T-Bird in Hemming Muscle Machines a few years back that "supposedly" got a Ford Nascar engine ordered from either the factory or the dealer and the car was used for running moonshine back in the day. A very cool car and would be right up the same alley as Brian's Monterey.

    Bingo

    Might have been a 59?

I'm thinking now that it maybe a "wish they would have" creation though.

1959 430 T-birds were available from Ford but minus the tri power.

67/68/69/70 Shelby and 68 California Special used the same set up as the T bird. The shelby just left off the chrome bezel in 67 and maybe 68 I would have to check.67/68/ 69 and 70 Cougar

Does a boat tail Riviera qualify? There was one pitted next to me at Stanton one year. I didn't have a problem with that or the big Buick Centurion, or the 65 421 2 + 2 Catalina, or even the 67 427 Impala or Biscayne...

348 Chevies were truck engines, but i would bet a tripower 58 Impala would have no problem racing with us...and should be...

This is what I believe what upsets some people about PSMCDR. Inconsistencies...I don't have a solution either, but then again, I don't have a problem with a lot of Day One modifications to the cars either. Let's just have fun.

If you can run a Gran Turismo Stude, why not a Tbird?

It might have been used in some wagons but it was also used in 7Litre Galaxies and one of those has raced and a Tbird is about as racey as that,It was also the same basic engine used in many many police cars from 66-70 and big block Cobras. It sure wouldn't be a top ten car but I bet I could get one in the mid to low 14 range with some tweaking a good exhuast and a gear change.Just becuase you don't like the idea don't run down the potential with your partial facts and ignorance.

I know about the 7-Litre, thank you! It was available from 1966-67.

But, sorry, 17-second quarter mile times do not a PS competitor make. I realize critics feel think some of the PS participants are running too fast, but that doesn't mean stones are welcome to balance it out.

How could I have missed them! :Dou:

However, I don't think the '67 Shelby had sequential lights - I think it started in '68. :Do No:

Let'em run. If a car is running 17's, so what. It's about doing the best you can with what you got and having fun doing it. Don't condemn someone just because they can't run what you consider to be a muscle car worthy time. I think it would be great if the 66 T-bird would run at the race. They certainly have the muscle car heritage. The T-bird's original purpose was to compete with the corvette, was it not?

We'll just have to wait and see what Bob and Dan decide. It's their party.

Chris, the Thunderbird was not a musclecar. A Stage 1 Centurion is much more in the spirit of the race than a Thunderbird. And the original purpose has no bearing on what the car evolved into.

Besides, I don't see the original Thunderbird as a sports car in the same manner as the Corvette. In fact, I feel the 1958 Thunderbird is just like the '57 but with two more seats - it was a boulevarder.

Of course, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it.

I bet the only T-birds they'd allow are the 1957 E- and F-Birds and perhaps the 1962-63 M-Birds. Any others are nowhere near a fuzzy definition of a musclecar.

Why not have a class for the large cars separate from the Pony cars. Man the thought of seeing those big boats running 16 or 17 second timeslips would be priceless.

There is no separate class. You run what ya brung, and ya get paired up with someone who's turning similar times. The hope is that you learn more about your car and you make new friends.
