Make sure that you're not using the low voltage power source (positive side of the points coil) to power your HEI. You need a good source of the full 12 volts.

Besides that, it sounds like your coil could be bad. Some may think it weird, but one time my HEI was going bad and I got stuck at a gas station. The car wouldn't start. This was in Phoenix, and I always had a container of ice drinking water with me because it was so hot out. Out of desperation, I dumped the ice water right on top of the dist. I jumped back in the car and - it started right up. I took it home and later changed out the ignition.

My point? Next time you take the car out, bring some ice water with you.

If you think it's that, then change your fuel filter. Be sure to use a good in line filter like the Fram G2. If the car does it again, look into the carb and pump the gas pedal once and see if you get a squirt from accellerator pump. If you do, then it's not a fuel problem.

Remove and have the high tensoin coil checked. This one part is responsible for almost all module failures in HEI systems. Also, it can take a new module and make it run at half output, so it MIGHT have already hurt the module, I said MIGHT, not did.

Could also be ignition switch and/or wires from it to the HEI for opens and problems, but sounds more like a coil/module problem.

If the engine fires right back up after the waiting time allotted, and not like it has to crank and crank to refill the carb, the problem is electronic, not fuel delivery.

well then i am pretty sure that it isn't a gas problem so a new distibutor should fix my problem?should i use a different type distibutor it is a 350 stock heads just redone, new valves(16), lifters, and a high performance intake. I already bought holley 600 i know now that it is to small is there any way i can tweek it for better top end performance

Why not find and fix the problem with the ignition you now have, you've replaced almost everything inside it.

Serioulsy, you have to be close to getting it corrected, shouldn't take much more to get it done.
