My Stage 2 project 1972 Skylark has a 350 turbo, I switching to a M22w, are the yokes and drive shafts different from 350 turbos to 400’s to 4-speeds? Educate me!
You'll need a whole new driveshaft and yoke. The m22w trans has the larger 32 spline output shaft. The stock shaft is too short and likely a garbage two piece unit anyway.
The output is my choice of either 26 or 27 spline. If I’m correct the 1970-71 is 26 and the 1972 is 27, but I have read nothing that said 32? And yes I’m having a drive shaft custom built. Correct me if I am wrong., I just need to find a 26 spline yoke, anybody got 1?
The input shaft is 26 spline, not the output. Autogear may offer the trans with the 27 spline output, but that would be like taking your sister to the prom. The 32 spline output is the way to go. GM's smaller transmissions used 27 spline outputs while the bigger trans (400, 4l80e, and later muncies) used 32. There was no 26 spline output.
M20 will accept a th350 yoke and is the same length driveshaft as a th350 trans. M21 and M22 take the 400 yoke
I’m ordering the Trans and need to know the spline count on the output to match the TH400 yoke. I don’t have one but need to buy one from someone here.
Sorry for being dumb, be patient with me but…..Front of trans is 26? I’m thinking backwards? The clutch is 10 spline isn’t it? How can this be so confusing? Input is on the engine side and output is the drive shaft end? no? I think….. Input shaft 10. (Front) Output 26 (rear) Autogear does not offer a 32 spline in the M22w only 26-27 spline output, 10 input.

maybe this helps. input shafts on muncie is either {early} 1970 and before course spline 10, or later muncie 1970 and later thru 1974 fine spline 26. out put shafts th350 auto, early muncie except m22 27 output spline. and turbo 400 auto and late 1970-74 all muncie 32 output spline.
Thanks very much…. That explains to me much better , Lol sometimes I need simple! So now, is a 26 or 27 spline yoke , which is easier to find for a Buick drive shaft to have made for a 1972 rear end to matchup?
You are wrong. Gm had both 10 and 26 spline input shafts. They never had a 26 spline output shaft, ever. 26 spline input generally the more HD units. How could a 10 spline clutch work with a 26 spline input shaft? GM had 27 and 32 spline output shafts. 32 being the more rugged. Autogear for sure as hell has 32 spline outputs on their M22w trans as I have one, and also an M23z trans from them. Call George, he'll set you straight. The later regular old GM muncie trans would come with 32 spline output shafts. Thats the 400 spline. Forget sourcing a used yoke. The driveshaft shop will supply a new one and won't want to use old junk.
Geez I have no idea how I got so confused, too many things in my mind or early Alzheimer’s!! You are right right right!! So what do you think is idea for my application, more splines is more strength?
I would talk to them about the different ratios they have available. The stock muncie ratios are not the best choices anymore..
