Is this a reproduction spoiler?

    Who made this spoiler?

Recently bought a used rear spoiler from board member DMoore. Now I'm curious as to exactly what I've got. I've looked at the spoiler faq on the buickperformance.com web site, and I don't think it's an original.

There's only one mounting hole in each pedestal, no vent holes (could be covered up), and it weighs about 14-15 lbs. Look at the pictures and see if you can tell me who made this thing. DMoore says he got it off a car over 10 years ago, so it's at least that old.

    Dean,
It's almost impossible to tell if it is a repro or original from the description.

If I were you I would figure it is a "71-72 style" reproduction and go from there.

duane, do the originals have 2 mounting bolts per side, i know some repos have 2 per side but one mount on each side looks alittle wierd? Gord

Until Duane can answer, all I can say is that this is the only spoiler I've ever seen that's had only one bolt per side. That's why I'm so curious about it.

Originals (that is the ones that were installed on the cars not NOS replacement pieces) have 1 stud per side with a strange (unique) large "sheetmetal" style screw forward from the studs.

The original studs are not made to be removable, therefore if they installed two studs per pedistal there would be no way to put it on the car without elongating one hole per side. (Due to the angle of the trunklid bend.)

    Dean,
It looks like there is a nut and washer at the bottom of the stud. If you take them off and take a pic I could possibly tell if it is a factory piece.

Could it be a 71-72 NOS piece that was installed with the stud only and the sheet metal type screw never installed? It doesn't appear to be an original take off with only the stud present. At best it's an NOS replacement, and possibly a reproduction.

Do you see any seams along the top edge like the factory "two piece" spoilers?

If it is determined to be a 71-72 NOS spoiler and you do not want it I may be interested for my 71 GSX.

    Dean,
The stud looks the same as my original 72 rear spoiler so it is possible (as James says) that it could be a factory replacement that never had the secondary screw installed.

If so it would work for a 71/72 car, but not a 70, and would require installing the ventilation holes in the correct placement/size for either year.

Yes, there is a seam, which is slightly separated by the way.
Here's a couple pics (spoiler is upside down).

    Dean,

Although it is always difficult to tell just by looking at the pics, I think the spoiler is probably a 71-72 NOS piece. Original and NOS spoilers were two pieces molded together, and as far as I know the reproductions were not. Combine that with the un-used part of the mounting pedistal (again, I think all reproductions had two mounting holes/studs on each pedistal but I am not 100% certain), and the 4.75" pedistal measurement, what Duane thinks may be original studs, and the +/- 15 lbs it weighs, it all points in that direction. The only thing missing is the weep holes which may be there but were filled in.

Hope that helps. Let me know if it won't work for you and are interested in trading/selling it.

Thanks guys for the opinions. I knew all the original spoilers were two piece, but did NOT know that most if not all of the reproductions were one piece. I think since the thing would have to be refinished anyway, I'm going to start sanding where the weep holes would be to see if anything shows up.
