Very cool `66 post coupe that I pondered for a couple of days because I was looking for a yellow/black vinyl top `66, but I`m not a post coupe guy, I like extra buttons...there also was a Regal turbo car in Joe`s driveway. Never found out which Regal but I was also looking/hoping for a WE4 car at the time. Congratulations with both cars! Great to know they are in good hands... The `65 should have been standard, via the feds on Jan 1st `64, with seat belts for front seat occupants....unless the original purchaser deleted them for credit. Colors on the `65 GS pictured are Sahara Mist over Shell Beige. Sahara Mist was a very popular color on the Rivieras. Tom Mooney
Thanks Tom Yes Tom- VS paint code That 65 GS is AMAZING Two tone was option - didn't know Spyder rims on Joe's 70 GS Look SWEEEEET Few of vin tag, removed 1 old air bag(what's left) and Back seat Flint built car.
And to make the 65 GS even better, it was a 4 speed! Not for sale though. Owner's (now deceased) husband built it for her.
I'm not '65 expert but I believe this to be the case for the three codes on the trim tag: 1st 0 = Chrome Seperator Trim (for the two-tone top) (an extra cost option) 2X => 2nd group, X=2-speed automatic transmission (an extra cost option) 50 => 5th group, 0= Seat Belt Delete (a credit) I found this comment about the seat belt delete code in one of the Pontiac forums that I frequent: "Group 5, Code O - Seat Belt Delete option. GM made seat belts standard content for the two outboard front seat positions in Jan 1964. From that point forward, you could order the delete option as long as the state where the dealer was located did NOT have a mandatory seat belt law. The credit was $11 on the Window Sticker, a few die hards that didn't want the Gov't telling them what to do ordered their cars without the belts. "
Ha, ha...too funny! That "5o" character on the Fisher plate is the seat belt delete code. The code was displayed on the Fisher tag so the folks who were putting together the body knew to delete the seat belts. Frugal buyer! I have a `65 Wildcat with the seat belt delete and the credit was a whopping $4.93. Tom Mooney
All correct info....but the Buick credit for the seat belt delete on the Wildcat was only $4.93. Maybe the Pontiac had custom belts as standard equipment? I doubt it but that would account for the larger credit. The credit didnt show up on the type written bill of sale for my Wildcat but in the owner`s list of options and cost it is hand written. Then again, the hand written cost for undercoating was $15 and on the type written bill of sale the cost is $35! Dealer playing games....I have factory price lists for early and late `65 options, out of curiosity I will check....yet another old car rabbit hole! Tom Mooney
From an official `65 Buick document/price list the seat belt delete credit was $11, exactly the same as Pontiac. So the hand written note in the docs for my `65 Wildcat are inaccurate. Dealer playing games! Tom Mooney
Thank you for explanation of codes- AMAZING INFORMATION. Crazy they would go through the trouble to put on cowl tag (seat belt delete). I'm going with Original Owner deleted in protest. Took few pictures of under hood of 66 GS - have not tried to clean up under hood yet- Gonna try keep it SURVIVOR look and only clean. Did little painting of engine and components yesterday since temperature was 40 degrees. 50 today - will try to finish up painting.
Just an FYI but alum foil works great for masking things off (hoses, fuel lines, etc) as well. Great cars!
Seat belt delete was on the wholesale car order form so it would have been a credit option when sitting down with the salesman and specing out the car. The seat belt delete code appeared on the Fisher Body plate because by `65 front seat belts were standard equipment so, just like the codes for optional equipment, the code for seat belt delete alerted the assembly folks NOT to install the standard front seat belts. Tom
Aluminum foil - never tried that- will try it. Tom- interesting fact. Got last and worst waterpump bolt drilled out and tapped(took lot of patience and evaluating). Refurbished all engine components (pictures) Just need to finish painting other 1/2 engine and grey exaust manifold paint -like using POR15 when manifolds on engine-Eastwood spray when manifold s off engine. Here's picture of my too many doors 67 Special I detailed couple months ago.
Update- finished painting engine and components, new waterpump, changed 2 core radiator with 3 core. After putting carburetor back on the accelerater pump not sealing (had little rip) so rebuilt carb. She's purring now. Gonna change out rear springs next(sits bit low for me).
Years ago I sold Joe a NOS nailhead 400 switch pitch transmission that I found when I bought a new Stage 2 engine that was in a back room at a dealer in Laurel, MD (Ballenger Buick). Unfortunately Stage 2 heads were gone.....
