Can anyone advise on the largest speaker size that I can fitinto the kick panels of my 69 Skylark? <o> </o> Factory AC car, and Idont want to cut any metal. Ive thought about the OPGI ones with 6 speakers, but Ive also read online some peoplehave had to bend the park brake pedal to get clearance. <o> </o> Not keen on that. Can any one confirm please? Cheers, Chris
The kick panels that you buy fit 6" speakers. The parking brake problem can be avoided with a flat grill/speaker cover or/and mounting the speaker behind the panel. I have them. I am not thrilled but it is an easy way to solve the problem.
I just bought Custom Autosound pieces on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/170774445208?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Have not installed yet but the instructions say it should be possible to install without modifying the park brake. I think a flat speaker cover would be required. Ill have to find a couple as the ones that came with my Pioneer speakers are far from flat.
I just finished installing the Custom Autosound kick panels with Pioneer 160w speakers. Other than having to trim a little off the top of the driver's side panel they fit perfectly. (just cut about 1.5" with tin snips) No park brake interferance and the screw holes were even molded in the correct locations. They were the best solution for a convertible. WAY better than a pair of outdoor speakers rolling around on the back seat! Take Care
Note : This is for a '70. You would have to be carefull when you step on the park brake, but lots of clearance. Take Care
Was going to buy a pair of kick panels with the speakers mounted into them. Thanks for all your replies, gives me food for thought. Cheers, Chris
They are 6 1/2" speakers, correct? Which speakers come with the lowest profile grills? I need to purchase a pair of these, then start looking for speakers. Any critical depth dimensions to consider when looking for speakers? Much better sound than the dual 3 1/2" speakers I am using now in the stock location.
Look on ebay for pioneer covers. They're just like what's pictured above. I installed the Custom Autosound panels this weekend. They fit awesome. And speakers are 6.5" I'll need to get a pair of the covers too as the ones on there now that came with the system do interfere with the emergency brake.
Hi Cutis; Did your kick panels come with speakers or did you get the empty ones that you can add what ever speakers you want? Just wondering because mine did not interfere with my park brake at all. Take Care
I bought them empty as the Head Unit I bought came with the 4 speakers. The grill covers that came with them are big and bulky, thick and ugly..I installed them now just for some protection until I find slimmer ones... that would hopefully be all black and make the speakers discrete.
Rick, I think it really depends on the speaker grill. I was thinking of getting the kick panels empty and using these since I have Polks in the rear already. I'm just wondering if there are any critical depth dimensions . I don't want to have to cut any metal behind the speaker. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DXI650/Polk-Audio-DXi650.html?tp=95
Those have a Top-mount Depth of 2" The instructions for the Custom Autosound panels said the 6.5" speaker must be 1 5/8" or shorter. My pioneers that came with the head unit were exactly that.
OK, that's what I needed to know. Thank You. ---------- Post added at 05:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ---------- Looking at my link, those speakers have a top mount depth of 1 11/16", that's a 1/16" larger. What Pioneer speakers do you have?
It's funny, under "highlights" it says they are 1-11/16" top mount depth but in "features and specs" it says 2" top mount depth. I think you could get away with 1 11/16" if you want to stay with Polks (they are great speakers). Just need to clarify the dimensions. Take Care
This explains it, Mounting: Out of the box the DXi 650 is a direct replacement for many standard 6-3/4" applications. Two mounting brackets are included with holes matching standard 6-1/2" (3-hole), Ford 6-1/2" (asymmetrical 4-hole), and various 6-3/4" applications. Without using the mounting brackets the speaker also fits into many standard 6-1/2" openings, but with a four hole pattern is not a direct replacement (new screw holes would need to be drilled; in this instance mounting depth would be 1.986" and mounting height 0.866"; this application does not sort in the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector because using the mounting bracket requires no modification, and is therefore the preferred 6-1/2" mounting method). The mounting brackets space the speakers out.
