Careful ... I'm getting a warm and fuzzy feeling ! Chris , Bill , and Jason Thanx for your thoughts. Ok now ya got me thinking. Ok who makes a good laptop and where do ya get the wireless connection ?? Gotta love this place !!!!!:Brow: :TU:
There are many good deals out there on laptops! You'll want to figure out what you want first. A coworker and I brought ours to a conference in Ottawa last summer. His is the Cadillac (fully loaded Dell - top of the line at it's time) and mine is the sports car (much smaller, less power, all the features I need and a lot lighter). Mine is a VPR Matrix, but you can't get them any more. I'm using a Microsoft wireless router attached to my incoming DSL connection. My wireless card in my laptop is a Dlink. Many of the laptops today come with an internal card. I would recommend going to a site like fatwallet, then going to their "forums" and "hot deals" part of the forum. Check out some of the laptops that are currently on sale and have decent rebates. You can go with a Dell, but you'll want to wait until you've got a good discount coupon. At Dell's site, you can sign up with your email address (use one that isn't your primary) and they'll send coupons out once a month or so. You should be able to get a good laptop for under $1000.
Dell or Gateway. Can get both items from either. Check out their websites. Great deals right now for the holidays.
Dell does have a lot of good deals. I do have a 15% off coupon for "select" Dell laptops, that I just got yesterday. Some aren't included in the deal. It expires on 12/12/03. Bruce, if you decide by then to go Dell, I'll give you first shot at the coupon. It's a one-time only coupon. If you decide that you want it, I'll forward it to you from my "spam" email address.
DONT BUY DELL LAPTOPS!! do buy one-i love em and prefer using the laptop to my desktop. we use laptops exclusively in our service trucks for diagnostics and estimating/invoicing. since 1998 we have had 1 toshiba (very good machine) 2 fujitsu's (excellent machines) 3 dells, all poor reliabillity, out of service 40% of ownership time, the latest one sits here, 3 months old, incapable of holding a charge in the battery or running more than 45minutes without overheating and shutting itself down. i am typing this on the compaq i bought to replace this latest dell pos. dell always sends out fedex to get em, keeps em about a week and returns them repaired but they shouldnt need this much attention-my others havent. what i have learned from this experience is: buy the laptop from somewhere local and get thier best extended warranty. ihave had excellent results from fryes electronics (2nd fujitsu had some problem with the battery charger, they handed me a new unit, no problems, no questions. ) i purchased this compaq from best buy with a "if we cannot fix it within 3 business days, we willl hand you a new one" warranty, and i get a loaner while it is down, should it go down. the dells i have bought were aprox. 25% less than a comparable machine from hp/fujitsue/compaq/etc and after 3 of them i understand why. the internal components are obviously not the same quality or the assembly techniques are shoddy enough to damage these internals. in either case, the downtime is really frustrating. good luck.
Bill and Steve Thanx !! Looks like alot of options here. Steve I will let you know if i can use that coupon .... Many Thanx !:TU: :TU:
and i just baught a dell http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_inspn2?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs but i can still stop my order
ou: Wow Scott and I was just on Dells home page .. Sure glad you said that , Thanx !:TU: And Albert , What you going to do ? o No: :error: :TU:
problems with compaq's My former school required us to have a compaq armada laptop and they're ok but i've seen lots of interment problems with them. I've had the internal network card fail i've since had to replug the card internally 4 times, the main board fail, the power connector fail (attatched to the main board) and the cdrw fail. all within 3 months. I've also had the keyboard stop working (needted to be opened and the ribbon cable repluged in on 3 occasions. though since that it's all been a good machine. oh... the clip that holds the battery in on this unit is also very undersigned. and if you a slight jolt to allow the battery to slide out will break the clip to break and the battery to fall out. compaq claims the laptop can function after a 10 G force impact but if you count the battery then dont believe what it says. Nate
Dells are Good, it's all about the model you buy. I personall have a inspiron 8100 that I've had for 2 years now. It had all the goodies they came with back then. This lap top has been on 85% of the time and it's been one solid piece. The only issue I've had is a Hard Drive failure, and that's not Dell's fault. Personlly for the buck, the Inspiron is a nice piece. I also have a NICE IBM A31 It's about 8 months old now...... If you compair them the IBM blow's the Dell out of the water. Even though the screens are rated the sam "Ultra's" 1600 X 1200" the IBM's screen is 3X's crisper and brighter to look at. IBM makes a VERY nice LAP top and I'll have a hard time going to any other brand after having this one..... The down fall is they are $$$$$ For the money, it's hard to beat Dell, HP, and compaq. I'd stay away from Sony and Toshiba.... Just my .02 coming from the computer feild and having talked with lot's of co-workers about them...
I got my laptop from Sager; http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html My next one will probably come from them, too!
Thinkpad! Alltime fav workhorse laptop. "What model" really sums it up tho as they ALL make a crappy one or two. "Warranty" Up to you but when making a recommendation I usually state the buyer should get the most they can. 3yr options are quite common now. Read and compare them carefully. Support. Are you calling India? Is there a local outlet you can go to? What is the closest authorized service center? Onsite service important to you? Ok, we are car guys. Many applications still work off the serial or LPT ports. Might check if they have them... car guys using a laptop for simple things and "car stuff" wont need this but if looking to replace your desktop look for USB2.0 and firewire. Portability. Dont go for the "dongle" setup unless its too good to pass up. Preferably you want a laptop that has the CD drive AND the floppy drive installed internally. If size/weight are more important disregard. Built in wireless isnt a big deal really since the technology changes quickly and isnt very $ If this makes no sense, Im blaming it on the Ale. S
laptops if u want a tough laptop , check out the panasonic CF50 . also , where i work , someone spilled a coke all over a dell laptop. the user called dell & they literally replaced the whole machine , no questions asked . we pay for 3 year onsite maintenance coverage .
Hi Bruce, Just thought I'd let you in on a great site for finding screaming deals on laptops as they become availible. I've used this site for a few years now and some of the deals are very hard to beat. Watch it daily because all the deals change / update daily....... http://bensbargains.net/ Enjoy
