I am upgrading from 14" to 15 x 7 on my 71 skylark. The local tire shop said the biggest I can fit on the front was 235x60x15. Does this seem right??

nope, they are a bunch of sissys!! 245's are no problem and there are guy's on here that have 255's and I think 275's.

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

255/60/15s are the maximum on a 15 by 7 rim. That's according to attached chart from BF Goodrich.

People are running 275's on the front!?

I've always liked to fill the wheel well, and the 245's fit nicely. But if your springs are sagging you may have some tight clearances.

245/60r15's will fit nicely. They are 26.5 tall and work really well up front. I have those on a 15x8 with 4.5 back spacing. 15x7 would need around 4.

From what I've read on the board, yes...I'm not saying it's the proper or best thing to do. Just that I had 235/60's on mine and didn't like em. I'll go with 245's, but I know Frank B. was talking about running 275/50/15's on the front and has 295's on the back. All on the stock 15x7 rims. My 325's are on a 15x10 rim, I really like the deep rim!!! :beer

    Bigger is better..........Right

OK, I was thinking 275-60's (which many people run on 15x7's on the rear).

I run 245 60R 15 on my 15X7 rims on the front and rear of my 69GS400 Convert and they do hit a little ( the trim retaining bolt ) if i hit a bump on a tight corner. But the car has over 300,000 miles on it and sags just the right amount to give it the look I like :Brow: ON my 64 I run 25560R 15 on 15X7 on the rear and they work very well too the fronts are limited to 215 60R 15 due to a low front end but thats different than you 71's front end

    I've always had 255/60-15 Front w/275/60-15 rear on my '70 GS on 15 x 7.
I always wondered why I could clear the 255 on the front with NO problems when others said 245 was max, and the car is a bit lower than the assembly manual calls for; then discovered I have F-body spindles.

Since then I've added to good tubular stuff but still run the same combo.

Thanks for all the answers guys!

I have 97,000 miles and I don't thinks the front sags at all. My new WP 15 x 7's do have a 4.5" backspacing though. Currently are 225 70 14 which if I'm not mistaken, has the same height basically as the 245 60 15?

i had a set of 79 trans/am 15X7 aluminum rims with 275r50x15 tires- 9.5" of rubber on the ground. i donot know what the offset of those rims was. i had no trouble with clearance of the wheel well lips. i sold those tires & wheels & installed the original 14x6 rallye rims, after several hours of cleaning, grinding, sanding & repainting..

I run 245/60R15's on my stock rallye rims with no problems at all. You can go with the 255's, but just be sure your front suspension is in good condition or you can have a rubbing problem on bumps.

    Tony,

    A 7J rim is 7 x 2.54 cm = 17.78 cm width

A 275 tyre is 27.5 cm width, so you will have:
27.5 - 17.78 = 9.72 cm : 2 = 4.86 cm of rubber sticking over the width of the rim on each side.

    4.86 cm = 1.91 inch.

    To me that's the "balloon-look" ........

Yea..o.k throw the math thing at me Erik :pp It just might have a "balloon" look as you say.Time to get some hard evidence from 275/60/15 on 15x7 users on the board.Thanks.Later,Tony

This is about the best pic I have of the 275 rear, 255 front that I have. The car is apart so I can't post a new one. I've never heard complaints about look of the 275 on 15x7 and they look fine to me. I would prefer a 15x8 but that can wait. Also, the car handles the twisties just fine with these. BTW, the chart on Tire Rack for BFG says 275 on a 7-9.5" wheel.

Right now, the snow would be up to the bottom of the window in that same spot.
