LED bulb issues/gauge ground?

Discussion in 'Sparky's corner' started by tubecatgs, Apr 5, 2022.

    tubecatgs Finally a 4 speed......

Ok, so had the dash apart on my 72 Skylark to replace a defective tach (must have the 1st defective TPP tach... lasted about 4 years)...While in there I figured I'd replace the bulbs with LED. Well I wasn't motivated enough to remove the entire dash so while removing one bulb holder/socket I dropped it in the dash somewhere and can't find it...
    Questions:
1- on both the 4 speed odometer and the ralley gauges (TPP repro), only the top bulbs work. Seems bright enough with 2 bulbs on the speedo but the rally gauges seem awful dim. Is that correct?
2- I see in some pics of Rally gauges (stole this back pic from ebay) there is a green socket. I assume that means ground of some sort? If that's the one I lost and replaced it with black one is that the reason the 2 lower bulbs don't work? Or what is the purpose of the green one?
3- in the pic of the back of the gauges I see what looks like a ground wire that pushes on a tab. I see the wire not connected behind my gauges but can't feel/find a tab on the back of the repro gauges. Do the repro's not have the tab or is it there and my connection came off? Thanks

There are 2 bulbs per pod for illumination. That is all you need. My guess is only one of your bulbs in the Gauge pod is working. It looks too dim. The socket color means nothing. I don't recognize that wire on a tab. There is a dedicated black wire ground in the speedo push on harness, and a metal band that goes between the gauge pod and speedo pod mounting screws. Why do the warning lights in your gauge pod look white? Looks like someone has been in there before you.:)

Thanks Larry. Ok makes sense with just 2 bulbs..The gauges were dim with the old bulbs as well which is why I wanted to replace them with LEDs in the first place.. I think I have an early TPP guage set and they aren't as transparent as an original. I think the guage pod looks white as it's not dark and the light is shining through. Oh and the gauges are all grounded together with ground straps... must just be the repro gauge.. dammit. I'll see how it looks at night...
