I am looking to replace the Grant steering wheel in my '67 GS, with the optional wheel that was found in later model GSs, like what is shown in the PIC below. Where is the best place to go to find a steering wheel kit that fits my car? I understand that the pre68 cars had a smaller diameter steering column. Thanks,
OPGI lists a 3 spoke wood wheel for 67-68. The spokes don't look as wide the pic you have, that looks like a newer wheel, maybe 69-70. Both are most likely Grant wheels. Art
There was no optional wheel in 1967 for the GS. The 3 spoke wheel in the pic was never available for GS in 67. It will fit with the right hub, however. If you ever show your car for the BCA, they will dock you for that wheel.
Yes I know that the three spoke wheel was not an option in 1967. When I bought my car the original steering wheel was long gone and since the aftermarket wheel that currently takes up residence on my steering column doesn't work for me, I am going to go with something that does. It seems that I can go anywhere and find a wood wheel kit for my car, but I like the looks of what I think was called the comfort grip steering wheel. I'm hoping someone on this forum has already installed this style wheel in their vehicle and can guide me in the right direction. And I think the BCA will dock me for a lot more than an incorrect steering wheel if they ever took a close look at my car. Like what I had to do to fit the 15 x 10in wheels that currently fill my rear wheelwells, which turned out very nicely. :Brow: Thanks,
There was a 3 spoke comfort grip wheel on my car when I bought it. It had the 69-72 hub on it which is a larger size than the column by maybe 3/8" or something. It looked goofy, and I planned on showing the car at the Nats for points, so I took it off and put a stock wheel on it. Now that the car has pretty much been retired from judging, I'm putting the 3 spoke back on. I think they look better, 999 people out of 1,000 won't know it was never offered, and it's what peeps expect to see on a musclecar. I bought an early hub for 67-68, repainted it, fits very nicely and is the right size diam. My car has tilt, the directional cancel cams are different than non-tilt. I have many cams + sport wheel parts, contacts + etc. I'm very familiar w/all GM sport wheels. The problem with this install is the horn contact + cam on the tilt. I'm waiting for a horn contact now that should work to finish installing it. The bottom line is it's a direct + simple swap, just make sure you have the right hub.
Without a doubt, the comfort grip wheel is the best looking wheel you can put on a Buick muscle car. And you'll gain a little extra room in the chest to wheel space. The stock '67 wheel is much closer to the driver than the comfort grip. I love mine!
That is exactly the setup I am looking for. My car is a non-tilt column as it appears yours is. So where did you get all your components for your install? This is what currently resides in my car and being that I do not have a tilt column, the top of the steering wheel blocks your line of sight to the speedo. ou: It's gotta go! Thanks,
What color do you need, I have a few I might sell, and I have the correct hub for your car. Email me direct, dadphelps@yahoo.com Mike
The wood wheel I bought for my 67 from OPIG looks really nice. True, they were not offered from the factory but they could have been dealer installed.
I need a stock black steering wheel for my 67 GS...any help appreciated... Bruce Kepley, Monroe, NC. 704-907-6495
Interesting, I have never seen factory/dealer documentation showing the simulated wood wheel being available in 1967( factory or dealer). It was for Chevy's but the Buick only cap would have also had to be available. I thought '68 was the first (only) year for the simulated wood wheel with the Buick horn cap. I keep hearing rumors it was available in '67 but never any proofo No: It does look good on a '67 though:Brow: Strange things did happen back then so who knows. A chrome dress up package was available from the dealer for '67 and '69 but not for '68. I wonder why? :beer
The hub you need for correct fit on a 67 GS is a 68 hub from a wood wheel. They sell the hub as a reproduction. Then you can fit the 69 and later three spoke wheel to the 68 hub.
Agree with Mikes thoughts, I have 3 oversize tubs of 67 Buick documentation including original in house non published documents, memo's, etc. and there is nothing that would remotely suggest a wood wheel was ever available or available to dealers for installation in 67 GS's.
I have heard from other board members that the wood wheel could have been dealer installed...I doubt it too. In any case, the wood wheel looks very nice! :TU:
A dealer could stick anything on a car, it doesn't make it factory approved or correct. Kind of like the 53 Wire Wheels on 57 & 58 Buicks, dealers did it, but it's not right or approved from the factory. Look how many dealers switched wheels, tires, etc, just to make a sale.
Yup, I know. That's what I need. I figured it was too much to hope for that OPGI was reproducing them... Bryan Woodworth has been warned to not be surprised if the one in his Skylark race car disappears one day. LOL
