I need to know what size bolt is used to install a mechanical fuel pump on my JW 470 ? I went to the home town car show today when I was leaving my 470 Regal stalled after sitting to warm up. Couldn't get it running so I went home and got some tools and went back. Well after seeing no gas coming from the carb I started at the fuel pump and found it hanging half out of the timing chain cover and no bolts in sight ! I was dumbfounded. How the hell can fuel pump bolts just fall out ? Any way nobody in town handles ARP bolts without special order so I need to know the right size for this application so I can get it home tomorrow. Thanks for any help Roger

Either 6, or 12 point header bolts or socket head cap screws so you can get a socket or allen socket in there. ws

I have never seen that happen, ever. Who installed the fuel pump? Hopefully, the bolt holes aren't stripped out. That is the only reason I could think of if the bolts backed out, and then fell out. When installing any fuel pump, you want to rotate the engine to TDC compression on #1 cylinder. If you don't, the fuel pump eccentric will be in the wrong position, and you will be fighting the fuel pump spring, and that can strip the fuel pump bolt threads in the timing cover.

SEE ABOVE. A drop of locktite wouldnt hurt either after a sprits of Brakeclean in there to get the threads oil free. Itll probably be easier to line up for you if you leave the pump to carb fuel line on too. ws

Larry , Jim at TSP built the engine for me and I'm sure he installed the pump correctly. It's one of his conversion pumps that he builds to fit buicks. I did have some trouble getting the outside bolt started so I plan on pulling the pump off and checking the threads and reinstalling it with ARP bolts. I was working on the road without enough tools so I installed the pump right were the engine was setting. Had no problems getting it home. Hope nothing else is hurt now. Roger

Probably the CV mechanical pump that I have installed as well. Very strange that the bolts worked their way out and you lost both. Mine has a stud and nut. I have a clamp for the fuel line installed there as well with an additional nut. Just checked mine, it is still tight.

Yep that's the same pump I have Larry and I'm still dumbfound about this happening. The stud and bolt system your using looks like it's the way to go. Thanks for that idea I'll put it to use. Do you remember how long the studs you use were ? Roger

I was just down to Fayette week before last. I took my wife's sister and husband there fore some local history. I get there at least once a year only a half hour drive from my home. Roger

That's the way it came from Jim. I believe the stud extends out about 1", so maybe 1 1/2" stud. Does your 470 use a roller cam?

I'm running the TA 290H cam in my engine. The roller cams were out of my price range when I had it built all though a roller cam version of the 290H would be interesting I think. I'm going to hunt up some studs next week and change over. I still can't believe it happened. Was quite embarrassing all these people looking at my car all day and several came down just to hear it run when I left and it quit running then I couldn't get it running at all. Not a fun feeling.
