What can you SS Chevelle guys tell me about this car?? How rare?? How many made?? Is it a 402? 454?? May be coming to run at PSMCDR 2013. Believe it or not, they WON this SS at a casino give-away last year!! Such fortunate folks!

    It is a 1972 SS with a 4 speed. VIN is 1D37U2R529***

  4. LS3 (402), 4 speed - should be an M20. Most likely a 3.31 gear set out back. Looks like a really nicely optioned car.

Some of the questions the owner has are "how many were made with the 402/4 spd", if the hood pins were optional, was the cowl hood availabe for 1972?? I guess they have had many "Chevelle Experts" tell them they never made the SS in 72, nor were any of those items available. They aren't car people, and I have no idea about the Chevelle to help them out.

Those so-called "Chevelle Experts" are full of exhaust fumes. I worked for a Chevrolet dealer on and off from June '70 until November '72. The SS was available in '72. And yes, the cowl hood was available. The flapper was optional, btw. Yes, he should go to Team Chevelle and ask, but still might need a filter for the BS. It's like that everywhere.

    Agree, "so called experts"

They have the basic stuff wrong, can't image what they would say about the finer details.

  9. The hood pins were part of the SS appearance package. Cowl hood was optional, and was ordered under the ZL2 option code. 71' - 72' had a specifc air cleaner, no one reproduces them. It looks like a really correct car from the pictures. The only thing I spotted was the shifter knob. IIRC - it should be a chrome ball with no shift pattern. (The shift pattern is on the console) Would love to see more pictures of the car. My father recently traded a green 72' with a green interior for a 66' GTO convertible.

    Hi Frank,
I can't answer to how many were made, but being a 402 4 speed with a/c, they probably didn't make many. Since I have owned a 72 ss 33 years I have done quite a bit of research on these. The 5500 rpm redline tach was big block only as small blocks got a 5000 redline. The car must have been built in late 71 because the park light lens color changed to clear 11/26/71. Sometime around jan. 72 they came with a seat belt buzzer and a light in the dash. The single sport mirror was correct also if you ordered the d35 custom rear view mirror. The shift knob should be black plastic PN 3992308 with no pattern. It is shaped like the old Vega knobs.Looks like a real nice car. You may remember my 72 at Stanton in 2006,07,08. Hope this helps.

  13. You are correct, I forgot that they stopped using the chrome knob in 70'. Do you have any pictures of your car online? Would love to see pictures of it. Having owned it 33 years, I am sure you have kept it true to it's original form. (A rarity these days)

Are you sure that the 2 is for the 1973 model year :Do No: ?

    Frank,

If you want, I can scan and post the 1972 Chevelle SS info from the 1961 - 1973 Chevrolet SS Muscle Car Red Book for you.

I missed that! The 2 before the plant code means '72. And the car is certainly a '72, unless they've done something funny with the marker lights- which could make it a '71. '73 is a whole different body style.
