Got a new fuel pump and that solved my problems. We got her to idle good and run, I even took her down the road a little. She has NO POWER and its slower than my daily driver (1988 s-10). Now, today we changed the oil and charged the battery, now it wont run. It will start up then it immediatly shuts off. Man, im really thinking of a v8 swap cause im not liking this 3.8. sorry need to release.

Changing the motor out won't solve your problems, although I think it's a fine idea.

There is nothing "evil" about the 3.8 - don't let your feelings get too involved! It's just a motor, and it will do whatever you are capable of making it do -

Hang in there, you'll learn tons of stuff working on this car!

That almost sounds like a carburetor problem. Am I wrong, or did the carburetor on that car have a float that often went bad and sank?

I had this exact problem with my 78 skylark. I have a 2brl carb with a bad float. I could drive it about 5 ft snd it would stall. I replaced the carb and everything is much better. what ever the problem it sounds like a fuel issue.

  7. I have an 81 buick regal, 3.8 and mine does pretty much the same thing. I have been told, " It is just smaller, and doesn't have any power"! I think it is a crock......LOL I think I will try the float after reading these posts....

On the later model 2 bbls. the floats do go bad or the power valves if its a computer controlled carb.
Good luck, I spent almost a month trying to correct one of these problems.
