Looking for ideas here. The LS3 is awesome and makes tons of power, but it's not much to look at IMO. I'd like to bring more old school cool back to my '71 pro-touring GS by somehow incorporating the factory GS air cleaner on the 6.2l LS3. I'm told the stock GS air cleaner would be so restrictive I'd probably lose 30-40 HP. Therefore, I'll need a snowball-effect of parts: -4150 style Intake - Bigger cam to feed intake - Fuel rails - Throttle body or adapter to utilize stock drive-by-wire with a 4150 style intake - ECM to allow for speed density tune now that MAF sensor is gone - Retro LS valve covers I realize it's a pile of parts that will add probably 75 HP, depending on cam, but is primarily for retro looks. QUESTION: Any brilliant, creative ideas to utilize a GS-looking dual snorkel air cleaner but somehow modify it to flow A LOT more air?
I've one LS??? with this on it.... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/..._1yjyRehuGl_BPbmD8zI0YbB7M1-m08gaAmsxEALw_wcB
Well, it sounds like it's an air cleaner question you're asking, so to word it minus the LS3 V8 thing, who's running big HP on a modified GS dual snorkel setup? The underneath stuff is already available, as you mentioned like: https://www.cjponyparts.com/fitech-...ke-750hp-classic-gold-chevrolet-ls/p/FI37003/ https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lss-gmls3022 Devon
Thanks guys. The intake, throttle body, etc. I've got figured out. As DaWildcat said, it's all about figuring out how to modify a GS dual snorkel air cleaner to flow a lot more air. I have one idea but I'm hoping to hear from others. THANKS!
I have a modified Buick breather on a Holley EFI throttle body with holes cut into the bottom of the pan all the way around the lower base. That set up still cost me roughly 20 hp at the tires. I bought the modified version that 72STAG1 is talking about but have not tested it yet.
How about a Buick over-the-counter "option" for 1968's dual snorkel? Got a sawzall handy? One member mentions picking up two tenths over his stock setup...that's about 20 hp right there. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/69-gs-air-cleaner-with-cowl-induction-bellows-boot.306671/ Devon
look up how chip foose did one. he made one use a old school round air cleaner. If you could make the inlet on the top like a new hemi with a custom intake would work too.
I had an epiphany this morning while working out. I first thought of making a horizontal cut all the way around the middle of the round part of the air cleaner, then welding in a few vertical strips to create a 1" air gap all the way around. Doing the math in my head while on the elliptical came up with this: Current 4" intake tube area = 12.6 sq in 1" air gap with a 17" circumference = 17 sq in THEN... I thought, why cut the air cleaner at all?! Just use a taller filter and leave a gap all the way around, with the air cleaner lid on top. DUH! Does that make sense? What am I missing?
Just make sure it still fits under the hood. When I added my SP3 intake, my snorkel air cleaner didn't fit anymore. I modified a donor air cleaner where I cut out where the carb sits and welded in a 1" ring essentially making it a drop base. It now fits, but barely. I didn't do any of it for the HP just the look. I know your looking to make it flow, but also make sure it still fits

Great post, Bill. Thank you! I appreciate actual data vs "my buddy's cousin's neighbor tried this once. "
