Based on my conversation with gearsnbeers, I want to pose this question to the forum....... The more times you race at the Pure Stock Drags, the more guys you meet and the more you get to know cars that race. Let's say you race a guy and he admits that he is stretching the rules with some non stock modifications. As the years go by, his car is getting faster, and through other boards you learn that the car is getting further and further from stock. But, still, the car is solidly in the middle of the pack, no suspicions have been raised, and the car is showing up every year to support the event. What do you do ??
Keep your mouth shut and let the people in charge of tech do the policing. Alternatively, start a new race called " Pure, Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race" where only guys who are not 'optimising' can race their Pure Pure stock cars. Have the race here in PA so I don't have to drive 10 hours to get there.
Re "On the Fence" Facetious - adj. < L. facetia; joking or trying to be jocular, esp. at an inappropriate time - SYN. see witty; adv. facetiously; n. facetiousness
Yeah, you got me RDL........All I was really trying to do was remind tripleblackrag to click a button on the poll....... sorry about that ou:
I think its time to certify the faster combos to serve as a benchmark for those trying to build a car to compete next year and beyond. My car will never run against an L88 car but I'm eager to prove that a 400 pontiac can run right up there with other big hitters.Hence, the fastest Mopar,Olds,Buick,Chev,Stude,Merc,Ford etc. should prove the legitimacy of their car with respect to the parameters set out by PSMCDR. Whether you're running in the 11's or the 14's you're still racing a similar car. ......and thats the way we lined 'em up way back when wasn't it?
Facetious is too big a word for monday morning. Sorry if you guys took my light-hearted reply the wrong way. We are all there to have fun and if you take things too seriously, it becomes a job not a hobby.By the way, it was very nice meeting both RDL and Donny at the PSMCDR. I was driving the 'Lime Judge.
aren't you forgetting another option in your poll? you are also forgetting the fact that you are about to drag other people into this now can of worms who don't need the aggravation. for their sake, i will retract my statement(s). my apologies to the forum. put your efforts into making your car faster. as stated before; the tech people know their job and do it well. the system ain't broke and doesn't need fixing. there's too much fun to be had. i don't care what other people run. :TU:
All the benchmarks outsiders use to rate the 'stockness' of these cars have already been blown out of the water........the old magazine tests. So, to a large segment of the hobby, we are all cheater if we don't fall directly onto this list http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/general/musclecars-50fast.shtml
Only participants should be voting. These things bring out the "why can't you let my car run?" people.
Rule stretching Personally I want to see what my car can do STOCK. The object is run a pure stock car as fast as you can. I can go run brackets with my pro street truck any time I want. Everybody gets all bent out of shape by the cheaters, but really the only people they (the Cheaters) fool is themselves. This shouldn't be allowed to degenerate into NHRA GT classes or pro stock. I think we can all figure out that small blocks aren't going to be going tens, stock. In talking with other folks who won't sanction these races they all contend that they're too hard to police or tech. So it's more or less an honor system, the absolute quickest way to destroy the whole scene is for everybody to cheat, or knowingly allow it to happen. Some guys will not learn though, the ones who always think they're smarter than anyone else. Really all they do is spoil the whole thing, then move on to screw something else up. :Comp:
   My vote is withheld. Rather than whine about not being able to participate, I'll use this space to point out that not all rule violators are cheaters. How many of the participants have no idea exactly what's inside their engine? Heck, some have been known to buy a car one day and trailer it to the meet the next. Without a stack of receipts from a very trustworthy seller, how does anyone know what cam or pistons are inside? How does anyone know the heads haven't been touched? The only way is through a teardown. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not complaining or finding fault with people. Just the opposite. I'm trying to point out that we're all in this for fun, and we can't expect to hold all participants to the highest standard. Those that want, can certify.
Todd, your internet handle threw me at first. Loved the 'Lime and good meeting you too. I'll put the Webster's down now. My vote: I would quietly try to persuade the driver to come back from the dark side. Then, if that failed, gossip and rumour his cheatin' @ss in the pits and hotel parking lot.
I can only speak for myself. I drive the red / Black 1967 Chevelle "SS396" I've been competing in the pure stock drags now for about 6-7 years. The car runs respectable 13.28 E.T. I'm a "middle or high end of the pack" I guess. I've owned this car since I was 17 yrs old (35 years). I can't ever remember having more fun with this car or meeting a better group of people than at the pure stocks. I've even got both of my sons into this. I built the motor for this car back in 1979. I'm not sure I remember everything that I did to the motor. I know all of the parts were stock but I do believe that the heads had a little cleaning out in the valve pockets and I did some port matching (intake to heads). I've done nothing "illegal" to the car since I started racing this program but I don't believe I could pass an inspection. But I also know that I'm on a budget and I'm not dropping $5000.00 on a rebuild so I can be perfectly legit. I'm doing this for fun and the people that I meet. When I build a new motor (this one just can't run forever) I will build it to the rules. Lets please not lose sight of the fact that this is a fun weekend of great cars and great people.
Jim, I respect your post, and I agree with you.... But, as long as your car is not undergoing an 'improvement program' with more modifications, it's not really the type of car that I am speaking of. Heck, if you re-rung it and didn't 'correct' the issues you have, I doubt anyone would complain. I am talking about knowingly breaking more rules each year.....
