My POP for my 70 GS 455 has "OK" for the rear axle code. Can't find this code in my documantation. I have no reason to believe that it came with anything other than the standard 2.93 open. Anyone able to illuminate this situation?
(It is deffinitely a "K", not an "H")

    Nicholas,
I take it your car was not built in Flint. I have 2 buildsheets from 1970 Framingham Mass cars with the "OK" rear code and both were 293 open rears. I have not found any documentation anywhere that can prove this. Hope this helps.

Yup, Flint, 03D. Do you know if the cars in question had "OK" on the rear end too, or just in the documentation? Wish I still had the original rear itself to check it's code.

There was a discusion about 6 months ago about the OK code rears, I think that was what was in Amandas GS, it was a 2.93 open built in Fremont.

    Nicholas,
Just dug through my 70 original buildsheets and also found an "OK" code from a Leeds Mo. car.
Can't tell you if the rears were stamped "OK" or not. One of the buildsheets I have with the code was from the donor GS 455 car for the X-Camino, but I knew the rear was changed because the build dates were off.
Maybe someone else can answer this one.

My CD catalog shows it as an option.

    For a 455 (non stage).

"OK" 2.93 one legger available on:

    models engine trans

    1) 433-435 250 AT350
    2) 430-440 350v8 ST
    (excluding Wagons & GS)

    3) 430 Wagons 350v8 At350
    4) GS455 455v8 AT400
    (excluding Stage 1)

So yeah, looks like that is how they made yours. Note it was only an option for a 455 GS (I guess the 350 didn't have the torque they wanted to see).

OK, (pun intended) now we are getting somewhere...
Does anyone know what the difference was between the "optional" OK rear and the "standard" 2.93 open rear? Perhaps this has something to do with the 4-pinion rears I've heard about for 70 455 cars? (unfortunately, my original rear is gone)
Guess I need to look for the old thread on OK rears...

Re: My CD catalog shows it as an option.

What is a "CD catalog"? My Wayne Roberts docuemntation doesn't show any options that would lead to an "optional" rear end. I'm really getting curious about this:confused:

You lost me with the "optional" OK

There are 4 different code breakdowns.
    1) Standard- Std. Code
    2) Economy- Std. Code
    3) Performance- P.T. Code
    4) Special Order- P.T. Code

The "OK" is ONLY listed in the Std. Code, (I assume only available without limited slip). If you have a fax #, email or PM me and I will fax the Chart. That way you can see all the combo's.....

"Optional" came from the title of your post "My CD Catalog shows it as an option."
If you don't mind faxing long distance, my fax is 713 798-0830. Looking forward to seeing it.

Just got the fax from Dan. It is from a GM parts catalog, don't know the year. The chart is totally different from the one in the Big Red Book (70 service manual). It shows OK for 70 GS 455, does not show the LB code at all. Also shows the LJ 12 bolt for 350-2bbl Skylarks that has been causing similar confusion. Thanks, Dan!

Try going to www.buickperformance.com and see if they have the info you need. They have a pretty good section on rears

    Build Sheet found

Hi Duane, I was just working on Bob Quigg's 1970 GSX Stage 1 4 speed and found the build sheet that was rolled in the hole under the drivers side windshield pillar. What a rare find to see something like this, especially when Bob had it in a body shop and nobody cared to see this unusually weird piece of paper sticking out precariously. Believe it or not,it is in surprisingly good condition, minus some paint marks.Do you remake build sheets going by the original and what steps should be taken for now? (other than to preserve the old build sheet?)Thanks for the info,Duane.

    Carl,
The sheet you found is the "Body Shop Inspection" sheet. I met some of the Fisher body guys in Flint and talked to the guy that taped them to the cowls, before the bodies were shipped to buick.
I can decode all the options on the sheets and send back a Reproduction that lists the decoded info on the back.
You need to make 2 photocopies of the sheet. Leave one alone, and ink in any codes that are hard to see on the other one. Mail them to me and I will take care of it for you.

Hi Duane, that's interesting. It was amazing to be able to talk to the assembly line workers at that event. It really makes you appreciate these cars even more. I'll send you the two copies you need. Thanks Duane.:TU:
