My engine stamping # is in the same postion as the 71-74 motor identification. Seems to have the correct #s.. The engine Id should match part of the vin correct IS something wrong?????? 1971-1974 Motor Identification (E2)
Pretty odd. What numbers are cast into the block at the rear of the intake area? (look at http://www.buicks.net/shop/images/bbbuick_casiting_no.jpg ) Devon
This is the area I checked and thought the numbers matched up with my vin numbers Please help guys....Im sweating of worry....
they do the last of my vin is z127965 and as clear as day the same numbers look to be on this area of the motor.
Slow down. When you say "this is the area I checked" do you mean the stamped numbers in your first post, or the cast numbers I referred to in my last post? Lets look at the casting numbers at the rear of the block. Tell us what the seven digit number is, and also whether it says 400, 430 or 455. Also, have you checked the usual spot on the engine deck for numbers as well as shown on http://www.buicks.net/shop/images/id_400_430_1968.jpg ? The pic you posted originally is the location for 350, not big block. Devon
Sorry, take a look near the bottom of this page http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_where.html where it shows "400, 430, 455 inch, 1968 on". The last pic on that page is also what I'm interested in on your engine. Devon
Are you able to visually tell if it is a big block this picture is my motor.. and I see on the manifold it say 400/455 Sorry I dont know a lot about this stuff can you explain where to look exactly I know the pictures show, but where is the best place to veriy
It's definitely a big block. Looking at the rear of the engine block as I described earlier, it'll either say 400, 430 or 455 with another casting number next to that. Devon
My engine stamping # is in the same postion as the 71-74 motor identification. Seems to have the correct #s.. so you've got the correct #s, but you're afraid they're stamped in the wrong place? the pictures at Buicks.net show the "generally correct" location for the stampings. some plants occasionally used non-standard locations or the engine could have gotten through the regular production line unstamped and it was caught before it went to assembly and was added by hand. if you're concerned about it being faked, get Duane Heckman on it. he can decode other casting #'s to see exactly when it came off the production line. I might be confused but the motor id is the same as you vin stamping??? the last 7 digits of the VIN and EIN ( Engine Identification Number ) should match, yes. there is also a 2 digit engine code stamping.
Re: Motor Identification??????? More help Ok this is it>>> I spent a while trying to find the numbers in their usual position but they are not there.... But THE UNUASAL PART IS THEY ARE IN THE 71-74 spot and with out a doubt they match the vin.. I also checked behind the manifold and is says 400.. see the pictures i have attached.... the vin is hard to see but it is there
By the block casting number it's definitely a '68 - '69 block. The reason for the numbers being in an unusual place? Ya got me there! o No: Devon
From your manifold pictures it looks like it was cast on 1st shift around 8 AM, if I am reading the code right. I cannot tell what year or month thougho No:
