Looking at mufflers. Just wondering what everyone is using. The Dynomax Ultraflow SS, side-in/sid-outs are no longer made. Been doing a lot of research but nothing recent as far as muffler test. Talked to the Magnaflow folks and their side-in/side-outs flow 1/2 as much as the old Dynomax! What are you running? Do you like them?

Maybe consider the pypes race pro mufflers. I have a complete 2.5 pypes system(race pro transverse muffler) on my 70Z. It was good for 3 tenths!!!!

I dont have mufflers on the Regal and dont race the Riv. The Riv has flowmaster 40's They sound good on the outside and I not obnoxiously loud on the inside. I can easily listen to the radio or have conversations at highway speeds.

DynoMax Ultra Flows here. Happy with the results, and as I don't drive it much on the street, the sound doesn't bother me at all. Music to my ears!

  10. I am in the same boat Jim. Thought I knew what I was going to use. My good friend that owns an exhaust shop wants me to use the Magnaflows. But, I see the the same things you did about flow numbers. Guess I will roll the dice when the time comes.

Right now if I had to choose it would be the MVR30 pypes mufflers. The Violator mufflers seem to do it but I like the larger case as I'm sucker for a quiet car. My preference is a stocker sound!

If I had my choice for the best sounding it would be the Hemi turbo mufflers from dynomax but they don't flow nearly enough. The Dynomax Ultraflow SS were great but they don't make them to fit an A body anymore. They flow a ton if you can believe what the manufacturers say and sound right in my view point. I like their construction and material as well.

Thank you to all for your input on the topic.

HI Jim, comparing the "flow" of the mufflers is not going to help you find the best mufflers for your application.... real world testing has proved that there is a lot more to a muffler design than raw flow numbers...

I vote for the magnaflow SS turbo series mufflers. They are not noisey and they do not give up much if any HP compared other mufflers.

Here is some info I found, although not really up to date my point is if you compare these HP gains/losses to the raw flow data you will see that you are barking up the wrong tree:

Good thing i found some HP numbers

    The results in HP order:
    1.Flowtech Warlock (open) 374.2 hp/ 333.1 tq
    2.Bassani Real Street 373.7 hp/ 333.8 tq
    3.Hooker Maxflow 373.5 hp/ 333 tq
    4.Borla XS 373.3 hp/ 332.6 tq
    5.Magnaflow 372.8 / 332.5 tq
    6.MAC 372.3 hp / 331.5 tq
    7.Flowtech Afterburner 372.3 hp/ 330.1 tq
    8.Hooker Aerochamber 372.1 hp/ 330.4 tq
    9.Bassani 372 hp/ 333.5 tq
    10.Spintech 371.6 hp/ 332.2 tq
    11.Edelbrock Performer RPM 370.9 hp / 331.3 tq
    12.Borla XR1 370 hp/ 334 tq
    13.Flowtech Terminator 369.5 hp / 331.3 tq

Thanks for posting. I think the power plant used to measure the above doesn't put out enough horsepower to show the weakness of the mufflers. Some people will debate that but back pressure through a 2.5 exhaust system is detrimental. Yes, I understand many people loose HP when they go to a 3" if not needed.

I know my little 350 will need all of the dual 3" to breath.... 2.5" would likely kill about 40 HP.... But yes a stock engine would like more back pressure.

Anyways I found this quote from Joe Sherman

"EVERYONE a the Engine Master contest used Magnaflow mufflers. I did test several others, but NONE were better on a 750 HP engine. The H pipe ,or X pipe setup is just for WEAK SUCK small blocks ( 302 Fords )It helps low speed power ( 4000 and less )Most BB anything have too much low speed power allready ( hense, you do not need it )A few years ago, I did some dyno testing on a 454 street motor. He brought his entire mandrell bent 3 inch exhaust, with the famous X pipe. Compared to my dyno headers, it LOST power every where. Poor guy, he spent 900 dollars on the trick exhaust pipes. Since I found out how good the Magnaflow stuff is, I always run all my dyno testing with mufflers.
    JOE SHERMAN RACING ENGINES"

That is why I run Magnaflows on all my vehicles...

  16. Jim, I had never considered those mufflers from Pypes. I may opt for them, I like the price!

On a side note, I swear I saw an older thread on here about your engine being dyno'd out of your car. Made 481 at the crank IIRC?
