Anyone know if the crank pulley bolt circle and centering hole is the same on a 1985/86 GN 3.8 and a Nailhead 401 / 425 engine?. Anyone have both to size them up? Thanks Roger
thinking about a serpentine set up, huh,,,,, whatcha gonna do about a reverse turning water pump and fan?????  Actually it seems like I have seen a serp. system on a nailhead here on the board.....
Well, 3 years ago , I had a underdrive pully made for my nailhead , b ut it is a v belt type.... but it could have been a serpentine....You may have to do that....but it looks like you are definitly committed....  Looks super good....and the engine too....
I'll have to check with my buddy, but I sorta recall he mentioned he used GN and late model Ford parts in his setup. Try searching online catalogs for specs. BTW, it really looks GREAT!!:TU:
Roger, the Engine and pulley system looks fantastic, well done. These links may help, if you haven't already seen them. http://www.marchperf.com/pg42.html#buick http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/buick/0501em_air/index.html http://www.customrodder.com/tech/0503cr_1962_buick_air_wagon_project_car/photo_09.html Custom Rodder Magazine used serpentine pulleys on a Nailhead project they did in a 62 Invicta wagon, and there is reference to March Pulleys. The Popular Hotrodding article refers to modified pulleys for a small block Ford. March Performance Pulleys list some Buick pulleys but nothing specific for Nailhead, but they may be worth a phone call. Ross
and the answer is............. Direct fit, both center hole and bolt circle. :TU: 86-87 GN The GN pulley from GN1 Performance is 1" larger in diameter (7"), but only 3/4" larger (rib to rib (deeper edge)) than the Ford pulley (6") that came with the Billet Specialties kit, so it will be slightly overdriven, should help the 1 wire alternator Now just have to line everything up Roger
I am and old member, returning to the Nailhead fold, and resurrecting this old thread because I am hoping to build a serpentine setup for my 401. Roger, your setup is pretty damn sweet. Any chance you could share some more details about the pulley components, idlers and if there are additional mounts for the plate below the water pump? Thanks, Len
Len, Thanks for the support and comments, Yes there are brackets below the water pump They are bolted to the engine mounts. I custom made them to support the external oil pump, alternator, and power steering pump. These I made from aluminum angle plate. I did not intend to make any others, so they are "one offs" that were marked-up, cut, welded, drilled, without recording any measurements. (not smart). The main plate is 1/2 inch aluminum The serpentine kit, is the deluxe Billet Specialties Ford FE setup. This was chose because the size and pulley orientation was correct. (I gave the plate to a friend with a Ford FE). This kit is pretty expensive, I saved quite awhile :> I've posted this link before of the build. should give you some ideas. Wow Roger, just wow. That is an amazing build, you clearly have an eye and passion for detail, nicely done. The Flicker build photos answered all my questions (for now). Thank you for documenting the process and sharing. Len
Just a general question on the harmonic balancer side of things. The Nailhead is external balance correct. So how does one go when the harmonic balancer needs replacing in regard to getting the new one balanced for the engine ? Surely it does not mean a strip down to take out the crankshaft. Does the workshop balance the new one to the old on a machine then it's just a matter of a direct swap ? o No:
Maybe for an answer; See post #69 http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...tins-425-cam-Grrrrrrrr!&p=2397461#post2397461 Perhaps Tom will chime in here
