    Hello -

I'd like to replace the power steering pump on my '65 GS (401).

In order to remove the pump, you must also remove the pulley. However, there is no way my impact gun is going to fit in front of the pulley to remove it.

It appears that I must remove the pump bracket. (Correct?) But, two of the pump bracket bolts go through the "dog bone" on the front of the motor.

    So here are my questions:
    (1) Do I have to remove the p/s pump bracket to swap pumps?
    (2) If so, is it ok to remove the dog bone bolts?
    (3) If I can remove the bolts, will I have to replace the dog bone gaskets?
    (4) If I can remove the bolts, Do I need to put silicone on the end of the 2 dog bone bolts?

Hope that makes sense... Thanks in advance.

    Dan,

Remove the hoses from the back of the pump. You have to remove most of the rest of the brackets to get the pump and front bracket off the engine. The front bracket goes under the pump and is held by the front nut from the head bolt stud. Both of those nuts have to come off the head bolt studs. There is also a support bracket the goes down to the block/motor mount that needs a nut/bolt removed.
Once you tear into it, it's not that complex. You shouldn't have to mess with the water crossover at all, but you might want to goop some sealer back onto those two bolts.
Then you can buzz the nut off holding the pulley. Piece of cake!

email me the shaft diameter of your pump once you get it apart, the part behind the threaded portion. I have a freshly rebuilt pump (never used) that I will let you have VERY reasonably, but it may have a different shaft dia. I had it rebuilt by Lares Mfg in MN and the shaft was different diameter so my 65 GS pully would not work. The pump I have is a 64, but you never know. Cost me over $100 for the rebuild. Will let it go for $65 shipping included if it fits.
