Need advise please-Painting a console.

    BUICKRAT Got any treats?

Were factory consoles painted? If not, can you and not have the paint fall off and will it look ok? I am restoring a 71 console, it's black, it's not trashed but it is faded and marked up a bit. It's an ok driver now and I'm afraid if I paint it it may ruin it. I bought a can of krylon plastic paint, totally stripped and cleaned the console without breaking a thing(except a couple of the clips that slide into the trim strip, they were rusted out...any one know where I can get a few of those?). I Any way, I just haven't worked up the b@&&$ to spray it. Please help before I have a couple beers and spray it anyway!:idea2: :Dou:

Clean , use the plastic prep and redye with SEM dye. This will soften the plastic and it will adhere.

    Here's what you need:

    >SEM "Sand Free"...this is their plastic adhesion promoter for, among other things, ABS plastic (the console body) that is textured. Probably about $12/can and you will only need one can.

NOTE: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BACK OF THE CAN!!!---They are specific on how to use it...I think it calls for a couple coats and then APPLY THE DYE/PAINT while it's still wet...BUT FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.

Alternative Product: Bulldog Brand Adhesion Promoter--You can likely find this at O'Reilly's Auto Parts. AGAIN--READ THE CAN--Different application method vs. the SEM.

    >SEM LANDAU BLACK PAINT/DYE--About $12/can or so. Has a great slight sheen that really recreates the fresh plastic look. Again--you'll only need 1 can.

GET IT CLEAN---HOT WATER,soap, and a good stiff short bristled brush to get into the nooks and crannies.

O'Reilly's may have the SEM stuff also...check around.

Not to disagree with the other guys but factory service bulletins call for the use of interior lacquer on interior ABS plastic and not dye. I have seen dyes used on consoles before and they have pealed off. Maybe they were not prepped right but I have used the interior lacquer mixed in spray cans and it was super easy. Just clean it real well first. No primer is necessary on ABS plastic(console) if lacquer is used. Plastic primer is needed for polypropelyne plastic like Kick panels.

No question laquer was used. It was also used on the interior plastic in aircraft because it softens the plastic and bonds. But I have restored the same consoles with the SEM. When used by the book with the adhesion promoter it also adheres and in my case it has for years.

From Buick Service Bulletin dated 10-18-71.

Procedure for painting hard rigid ABS plastic.

    Description

Rigid or hard ABS plastic requires no primer. Conventional interior acrylic lacquers adhere satisfactorily to hard ABS plastic.

1> wash part thoroughly with apaint finish cleaning solvent such as Prep-sol(and others)

    2. Apply conventional interior acrylic lacquer color.

    3. Allow to dry and install part.

Note: Apply only sufficient color for proper hiding to avoid wash out of "grain" effect.

This method works quite well for painting challenged folks like me.

What is considered 'conventional interior' acrylic laquer. I've seen acrylic laquer in spray cans but they seem to be for exterior finishes. Sorry to sound stupid, but I am, I guess. Do I just look for interior paint and make sure it's acrylic laquer?

Check major suppliers like YEar One as They sell interior laqyuers in pray bombs. Google "Tower paints" and they also mix to order in spray bombs. I used tower with excellent results.

Either way is very acceptable. I've done literally hundreds of interior piece's (both methods) over the years. So choose your poison and have at it.

Preperation is the key. Clean, Clean, Clean, is a must.
Clean it so that.....when you put water on it, it sheets off the surface and doesn't bead up. Then you know your ready to start painting.

    Good Luck
