An ORDINARY rebuild is easily done as a weekend project. I rebuilt carbs on my lunch hour in the high school lunch room. (no one would sit by me.) You may need to take the base plate to a machine shop to have new throttle shaft bushings installed--they'll use thinwall valve guide inserts; it lasts a long time. The hard part about carb work is the re-calibrating of jets, passages, and air bleeds. But you don't do that in a standard rebuild--so--a standard rebuild is easily done as a D-I-Y project. Buy a bucket of carb cleaning solvent; and soak the castings--or--you can get a couple of cans of aerosol carb spray and just carefully clean the castings and blast out every drilled or cast passageway. Adjustment specs and instructions will be packaged with the carb kit. Some folks like the Genuine GM kits; I buy Standard/Hygrade "Jiffy Kits" most of the time.
Need more information on your carburator. Are you just looking for a simple rebuild? Are you looking to do a jet change? Is the carburator the one that came with the car? Has the carburator been been alway out of the weather (air cleaner) What do you know about the one you want rebuilt? I know, many questions but when I need something done and don't get any question and only what it will cost that to me is a red flag! AL.
Al, The carb that came with the GS is no.7027244. I was told that this was a dealer "replacement" carb for 7027146. Is this correct? I was told this carb was rebuilt by John Osborne,but I have my doubts. In any event, I need a rebuilt carb. The GS has a TA 212-455 cam and the distributor has been worked(16* initial,all in at 3500rpm). The heads are from a 455 with stage 1 valves. If you need any other info,let me know. Thanks
I deal with "The Carb Doctor" for my Delco jets and thicker upper vent bowl gaskets and quility lowers. I built mine to 72 Stage 1 specs and think this would do well on yours. What makes you thiink it needs rebuilding? AL.
Send him an email by clicking at the bottom of the Board. He is likely in an engine rebuild and dyno marathon.
First, previous owner was driving it with no filter! Second, I could not get any idle changes(vacuum) by messing with the mixture screws. Finally, when trying to start it one day it shot a volcano of gas up against the underside of the hood.
One other thing you need to look into is the condition of you brake booster and any other possable vacuum leaks and vacuum advance and timming, AL.
I put a rag over the carb while the engine was running. It died out immediately. Timing and vacuum advance is good. I did have to replace the Crane ignition module-spark was breaking up at around 1100 rpm. Put in a Pertronix and solved that problem.
Carb went off to Jim Weise this afternoon! He asked for all the specs on how the GS is built and told me to send it in. Should be about 2 weeks turnaround time.
