While my GS is having the new motor installed I also want to resolve two oil leaks in the Tranny. I need both the rear shaft seal and the speedometer housing O-ring. My tranny is the original BA Turbo 400 and it has the speedo housing that accepts the 41 tooth driven gear. My local NAPA store says there are 3 different diameter shaft seals; 2 1/2, 2 5/16, and 2 5/8.
Remove the speedo adapter & either measure it or bring it to NAPA to match up. How hard can that be???
Just buy a complete seal and gasket kit. It will be less expensive in the long run and you'll want to put in a pump seal and while its on the bench - a pan gasket, shift shaft seal, modulator seal governor cover gasket etc. Might as well replace the pan filter, too. https://globaltransmissionparts.com/turbo-400-6l80-1965-1987-gasket-and-seal-overhaul-rebuild-kit/ If you can't find a speedo housing o-ring I'm quite sure I have some here. Output seal is 2 5/8 " (total diameter is 3"
Ray, Call this place ... They carry high quality rebuild parts. Transtar Industries Orlando, Florida Branch 4290 Seaboard RoadOrlando, FL 32808(407) 299-4400(800) 274-5226
I do know depending on the year there are at least 2 different output seals, if no one has swapped any parts the 67 and under normally use s seal with small id the BA code first came out in 67, so depending on year you do need to be careful here. But I agree on the getting the full seal kit just swap all the seals. The extension housing is 6 bolts. The governor is full. The shift seal buy the 10 tool on Amazon and make it easy, the electrical connector or g you can get while in the pan....beware thes plastic clips break so just but a new one for a few buck. All will take less than an hour when onnthe bench
Guess I forgot to mention that while the new engine is being installed the tranny will not be out. It's the original BA Turbo 400 VIN matched to the car and has been overhauled when the car was restored. Shifts great and fluid is clean but leaks out of the speedo housing since we replaced the driven gear and also leaks out of the tail shaft. So, I just want to resolve the two leaks with the tranny in the car.
I would put a close on the yoke for wear and also check for slop in the tailshaft bushing. Those seals are fairly resilient, especially being that new. You might be treating the symptom and not the cure..

the longer the wait, the higher the appreciation I have a spot somewhere in the same waiting line. Similar HP, but different setup: Stage2 heads, no roller, aluminum intake, TA-headers, 750 QJ. Let us keep our fingers crossed, that circumstances will allow for a timely completion of our builds.
