I just got the AC in my 71 GS connected up last week, and the first time I turned it on it was fine, blew nice cold air. But the second time I tried it this week, there was nothing. When the AC is on, there's a kind of repeating noise about every three seconds from the condenser, and every time it makes the noise you can see the belt flutter like it's trying to start up but can't. The idle also drops slightly. It's a brand new Pro-6Ten compressor, but it was on the car for almost a year before I hooked it up. Everything else is new, condenser, evaporator, hoses, etc. Other than replacing the compressor, I'm at a loss as to what to look for.

do you have a low pressure switch? Try by passing it to see if the comp comes on.

ddhathaway I had the same type of thing happen. Make sure you a full 12 + volts at the compressor. It sounds as if the compressor clutch is not locking itself in. The head/clutch on mine failed - was only 1 year old probably used no more than 3 or 4 times. regards byron

Checked the voltage, everything else I could think of. Even rapped the compressor with a hammer a couple of times.

How about that short ground wire. Try putting the ground I'm a different place

Not sure how the controls are setup for your system (factory original or aftermarket/late model) but if you have a cycling system it sounds like you are either low on refrigerant or the cycling switch is acting up. First step in AC service is to check the charge.

Dennis - we ended up pulling the front clutch off of the one that failed on mine. It was burnt as well as had a ton of dust in it. (clutch). Originally we thought I had less than 12 v - not the case. (long story). The clutch comes off very easily - if I recall correctly, this is a push type of clutch.. And, if the compressor is good - full charge you can replace just the clutch assembly. byron

I ended up replacing the control switch and now it works fine. Hopefully, it will still be working next summer when I need it. Thanks very much for everybody's suggestions.
