New here, need hellp with a V-6

Discussion in 'Wet behind the ears??' started by SeargentDimples, Jul 22, 2003.

  1. I am new here, and I have a 1981 Buick Regal, 2 dr., 231 v-6 3.8 liter....I have about 100,000 on a replacement motor. About 1 1/2 years ago, we put a new carb. on the car. It started running like it had water in the gas, about a year ago. We put some dry-gas in it, to dry up the water. Well, It is still running terribly. It acts like it isn't getting gas. WE have replaced just about everything on this car. It is the 3rd motor, and this is the most miles we have ever had on a motor. At about the same time the carb. started acting up, we replaced the lifters when we went to MI from SC on a vacation.....They had been making some noise, and after we got there, it got alot worse. What would make lifters go out on one side of the motor? Thanks for any input you may have.....we are about lost trying to think of what else to do with this car.

    Sound like

    bad oil pressure.
Maybe to much clearance at the oil pump
    front cam bearing has melted
no oil to the cam causing cam lobe wipe out on oneside.
just remember the modern Buick V design has the same oiling problem has it's big brothers[455-350 cu in engines].
sound like a commercially mass rebuilt V6 with little or no attention to the finer specs of our BUICKs.
You are probly going to have problem until these issues are cleared up.
