I need to replace both the timing and pump cover on my 71 350. I have been told there are afordable aftermarket pieces made. Anyone know who makes them and where I can find them?(Besides TA, I'm in Canada and cant afford theirs, although I wish could)

JcWhitney sells one, I think it's about $100 US. You may as well spend the extra $20 & get the GM version. I purchased mine from GMpartsdirect.com - I think it was around $120 or $130...

Here's the info that I was given & used to purchase one for my '64 300:

    Part number 12337249
This is for a timing cover w/gaskets. Other applications listed include 64-67 225-300-340 engines, 68-74 350 engines, 75 231 and 350 engines. This data comes from the Buick parts microfiche for models up through 1975. Printing date is 4/83.

You'll also need the timing indicator for this cover, I had the part number but seem to have lost it. It's just a plastic bracket with timing marks. In my case, I needed to purchase a different dist hold down clamp as well, (another $2.00).

How long ago did you buy the cover from GM? Its not listed on the GM partsdirect site and I talked to the parts department at my local BOP dealership and they said GM discontinued the piece.

    hey regal 350

I was wondering if anyone in Canada sells buick rebuild kits. I'm looking for the quality stuff. I have other connections but I don't trust the parts. Any Ideas

    Thanks
    Marc

    Marc,

If you're looking for performance Buick parts Canada isnt the best place to find them, especially for the 350. As far as a rebuilt kit I'm not to sure. Out here in BC we may have different parts suppliers but I would have faith in buying kits from a couple of the local stores. We've got a really good performance engine shop here in town and I took them the block, crank, rods, pistons, and cam and had them assemble short block. They charged me $125 labour for assembly, installed all high quality bearings and had it done in 2 days. Definitly saved me some time plus my short block is also backed by a premature wear warranty. You might want to try something like that.

I just need to find some quality parts. I have put a number of engine's together so assembling is not a problem. I surfed the internet for 2 hours today looking for some rebuild kits in Canada but I don't know where to start. Think it's worth buying from TA. I 've ordered from the states before and it costed me an arm and a leg:stmad: . Where do you get your parts?

    thanks again
    Marc

    Marc,

I fyou're having a shop rebuild the engine for you ask if they will recieve and broker shipments from the US for you. I've got a great shop out here that does this and saves me a fortune.

If you're interested, I can show you how to set yourself up as a broker and import parts directly rather than through Screw-U-PS

    Marc,
I know what you mean about costing you an arm and a leg! I ordered my headers from TA. TA's price was $289american I believe but total cost to me by the time they got to my door was $750canadian!
I bought headers and an oil pump kit from TA and am ordering an intake too. Pistons, cam, lifters, distributer and everything else I got at a local speed shop.

Mind if I ask what pistons and lifters you guys picked up? I've called my Federal-Mogul guys here looking for the PowerForged pistons TA uses, none until January but they also seem to have no luck finding lifters :Do No:

I used comp cam and lifters. The pistons were cast and to be honest I dont even remember the brand, I thing FM, I'd have to dig through my bills.

Also, be careful when buying lifters. Some manufacturers make undersized buick lifters which increases the clearance in the lifter bore. This will cause a drop in oil pressure. The comp lifters were affordable and available in Canada and they havent given me anything to complain about.

Thanks guys, I'll look into comp cams. I'll be ordering a boatload from TA all at once and try to clear the brokerage then.

    Marc,

UPS brokerage fees are charged to you without your consent because you are a private citizen, if they ship to a Business Number they are required to let the business act as a broker to import goods into Canada. This charge is typically 30-50% of what you've imported. The shipper pays for the service to have your goods delivered, but you pay UPS to do the Brokerage

Why does UPS charge $48 for a $100 shipment? Well, it's pretty tough work, you have to fill out a form indicating what's been imported, and then cut the government a check for the GST. Takes less than 2 minutes! :af: :af: :af: Wish I could charge those kinds of rates.

To be your own broker you need 2 things:

    1. a business number
    2. an import/export account

    You do NOT need:
    1. a lot of time
    2. a lawyer
    3. ANY cash

Call 1-800-959-5525, or surf to www.businessregistration.gc.ca and register a Business Number for your name. It's free, if you are not earning any income with the Business Number then there are no tax headaches or reporting, and you can use it to get discounts as an importer or distributor for vendors like CrossCanadaParts.

You only use your import/export account for importing or exporting. If you do not use it, your account will expire after two years. You can reactivate it by contacting any customs office. If there is any change in your status (e.g., name or address change), you must report these changes to us as soon as possible.

^^^^ a snippet from the fllowing article on how to become a broker

    http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/customs/business/importing/registerintro-e.html#P192_15248

OK, OK, I know this sounds like a real legal headache and a lot of paper pushing BS, but this really takes less time that changing your valve covers, and the savings for us Northern folk sure is needed! I did it myself and all the staff were really easy going and helpful. I talked to the BN registrar for 45 minutes about Buicks!!

I've imported stuff myself thru UPS (they are NOT pleased about you knowing this) as my own broker twice now and it's a complete joke.

If you have any questions at all just PM me and I'll be glad to help. Anything to avoid a fifty cent on the dollar surcharge!

    Levianthan

That was easy:bglasses: , it took me 10 minutes. By the time I drank my morning coffee I had a business.

This is really great I thank you very much. For a guy building on a budjet I will be able to purchase more parts.....more HP:grin:

I was really debating not buying from TA cause of the cost. With all the parts manufacturing problems with this engine I was getting worried, I was gonna have to buy "unknown" parts. Not any more.

If there is anything that you need. Let me know i'll do my best to help!
