Hi Everyone, I'm a new user with a new project as well. It's a '39 41 series with the classic running boards/spare tire mounts that I like. It's got potential, but right now it's a rust bucket and needs lots of welding before I even start with the motor/trannie.Lot's of sheet metal work, Oh Joy! That may not be all bad , because what I really want is a convertible or phaeton. Does anyone know anything about ragtop conversions? I will post pics when I can. Keep the faith, Todd :beer
:Comp: Welcome Todd ! Your gonna like it here. Lots of great info and alot of kool members ! Good luck with your project . Where do you live ? Take care:TU: :TU:
Hi Todd, Sounds like a cool project you have. Do you plan to turn it into a street rod or just a "phantom" stocker? I have seen several guys turn cars into ragtops, the most important thing is to brace the body and build a good sub-structure before you cut the top off. I recommend using 1" tubing for most of the structure. Small diameter exhaust tubing can be used at the "top" of the body to provide a smooth finish if you do not plan on roll up windows. I don't have any info on building/buying a working folding top, but building a "Carson" style top is not terribly difficult. Rod and Custom magazine ran a how to article a few yeas ago:TU: Good luck, let us know how things are progressing:Comp:
Welcome Todd! We are getting more and more owner's of older Buicks on this board. And I for one like it! :beer
Thanks for the Memories Thanks Everyone for your input. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your replies. Wow! That other thread about the first rides blows my mind. Mine was a 70' Dodge Road Runner, 4 in the floor, 383 and watch out when Momma called to say dinner was on! Things have been going 90 miles an hour for me lately because I am building a new house, for me as well as the 39' Buick. We live in Athens, Ga., home of the Dawgs(yeah that's right) but don't have much time to see em' play. But seriously folks, thanks to Joe for the tip about "Carson" tops. Went to the Rod and Custom website, checked out the past article about custom ragtops and found it very interesting. Hmmmmm. How badly do I need a working original convertible top ? Lord knows there is going to be a world of welding to do just to get floor pans brought back to spec, door posts reattached, build a front seat bulkhead to give the stiffness that the original did on ragtops. I almost sound like I know what I'm doing don't I ? Guess what? I do until someone comes along who REALLY knows what they are doing. Thanks for caring. Todd :beer
