NHRA/IHRA Safety Rules Question

I did check their sites but couldn't find the info. Seemed like they were pushing rule book sales versus providing the info on the site.

What are the safety rules for the driver and car equippage? In my specific case, a hardtop in the 12s. Helmet, drive shaft loop, etc.? Roll bar comes into play at 11s or 10s? I know the convertible is different from the hard top as far as a roll bar is concerned.

Seems like this would be useful info to post somewhere for reference. It probably is but I haven't found it anywhere yet.

    Thanks for any help.

11.99 for a roll bar on a hard top
    13.99 " " convert

Anything with slicks gets a loop
All batterys must be tied down
studs thru the wheel nuts on a aluminum wheels

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head :TU:

If the battery is in the trunk area, you need a disconnect.
    I think?

... and your radiator overflow bottle has to be hooked up.

Yup, good info so far. Once you hit 11.99 in NHRA you need:

    - 6 pt roll bar
    - 5 pt SFI appr'd harness
    - Single layer fire jacket
    - Studs through the nuts (I think that is even true at slower ET's)

    On any car:

    - Battery in the trunk must have an external disconnect
    - Cars with slicks must have driveshaft loop within 6" of front u-joint.

Something funny, though, with NHRA. If you are running in Stock Eliminator you don't need the fire jacket, except for certain classes. You will see drivers in low 11 sec cars without fire jackets. It has to do with NHRA's control and the extent of tech inspection.

    Have fun.

When you say "slicks" with a loop, does that include drag radials? Or is that a whole other ballgame?

Another thing to consider is that your track can have more strict rules than the the NHRA/IHRA too. At one point a couple of years ago, anything in the 13.99's or quicker would require a loop regardless of tire type. At least that's what we were told. I don't know if anyone was booted for this or not and I don't know if it's the rule today either (Seattle Int'l Raceways, at the time).

    CORRECTION:

I just looked at my rulebook and it does say that any car quicker than 13.99 needs a driveshaft loop, regardless of tire. I hope I didn't mislead anybody. Sorry.

    Have fun.

Rules are different for IHRA and NHRA. IHRA doesn't require a roll bar in coupes until 11.49 and I believe 13.49 for convet's. NHRA is 11.99 and 13.99. Driveshaft loop required on any car runing slicks and 13.99 cut off. Helmets required @12.99. Battery in trunk requires external cut-off switch. Any installation of a bar or cage also requires harness. Full frame cars, bar/cages must be welded to frame, no plates on floor pan. They are trying to get both sanctioning bodies to have same ET cutoffs because if you car passes IHRA rules it doesn't mean it will pass NHRA. NHRA is tougher.

I believe the new rules state that the driver's side seat must now be attached to the cross roll bar via some welded bracket. Now this may be when you get into the 11's can't remember. Addditionally, the harness cannot be attached to the floor behind the driver's seat anymore. It must be attached to the roll bar cross member also.
