Sunoco will no longer market 94 octane gas in N.Y., Connecticut, and N.J. Their Ultra will now be 93 octane. When I asked a station attendant why, he said it had something to do with MTBE being outlawed in those states. Apparently, MTBE ends up in the water supply. Guess it would be too expensive to give us higher octane the old fashioned way! Now they want to charge the same price for one less octane number:stmad: I still don't understad why gas prices are so high.:af:

Everyone thinks it's the government's fault, but look at the profit margins these oil companies are making. That's why prices are so high.

So to me that means a fair amount of gasoline in general ends up in the water up there...sounds like they are treating a symptom, not the disease. How's the MTBE ending up in the water?? Who's spilling the gas?

I think it would be a bad idea to charge the same price that Ultra 94 is now for the 93. That would basically cause them to be 5-10 cents higher than any other gas station for premium fuel, and the differece between 89 and 93 would be 15-20 cents, which would be completely out of the norm. They would lose all, well a lot anyway, of their premium gas customers, including me.

A few years back, the city of Santa Monica (CA) had to shut down their water supply because of MTBE contamination. I believe that it was mostly caused by leaking underground storage tanks... :puzzled:

I hope they keep the same price in NY when the MTBE is outlawed... They said on the news that gas prices could reach over $2.00 a gallon in NY state by next summer because of this change:af:

Last time they tried to remove the MTBE in NY (replace it with methonal (spelling?)), my daily driver started to run like garbage.

This is just be another reason for me to want to leave NY state.:moonu:

I went to NY last winter to pick up a 67 Buick.

On the way home we noticed that almost all the gas stations had cones set up across the gas pumps and you couldn't get any gas.
And I'm talking every gas station we saw for an hour!

I was starting to get worried, but we found one before going empty. I thought it was really weird, but with the excitement of bringing the new car home, I forgot about it until just now when I read this thread.

Is there some type of "NO GAS" time or something in NY?
Seems to me it was around 1:00 or 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon.

And the gas station we did find, had cones setting off to the side like they had either just been used, or were getting ready to use them.
    :Do No:

    Larry,
I had the Skylark out yesterday morning to get it inspected and drive around for awhile.
When I stopped at the local Sunoco to fill her up,I asked the guy "wheres the 94 ultra?".
He tells me no more 94, only 93 octane.I told him B-S. He hand '
s me a pamphlet explaing how by Jan 1,2004 New York AND Connecticut will ban the sale of fuels containing MTBE which is a critical component of Ultra with 94 octane!!!
I can't believe it!! What a crock,The cover of the pamphlet says in Big letters NEW OCTANE / SAME QUALITY .
So I quess i'll be shoppind around for the best price for 93 octane from now on.I did'nt mind paying the outrageous price at Sunoco for that extra point of octane, but now I will be bargain hunting.
P.S. What fuel you gonna run in your GS??

Oh Yeah, One more thing, That Pamphlet from Sunoco also states "This change also affects our gasoline distribution into the remainder of New England, so our gasoline offerings will change there as well.
Sorry Chris, but it looks like your days of 94 octane are almost over too. Some time in early 2004.
    Aint that a B--ch!!:stmad:

    Kenny,
I guess I'll just shop around for the best price for 93. I normally mix in a gallon or so of race gas when I fill up. I just bought 5 gallons of 112 when I was at Atco. You can also get 110 Cam2 at that station off exit 17 of the Southern State. Does the pamphlet say anything about N.J.?

Well, I don't know if this makes anyone feel better or not, but when I was in engineering school, one of the professors who worked for the DOT once upon a time, told us that even if the octane rating says "94", you may not really be getting that octane anyway. We were discussing aviation fuel at the time, and octane rating for cars came up. he pretty much snorted out, "what a load of BS, those liars say anything to sell their gas"

What I don't like is that a company like that can claim a problem in one state, then say it effects another, too. I don't vote on New York State laws, they don't vote on mine. But now Sunoco says they know better than both states, so what one gets is what the other gets. It's probably boiled down to the fact that they will lose 3 cents per shipment per year if they only service certain states in that area with 94. I know that's an aspect of business, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

    Ethan:

That's exactly what I was getting at. Sunoco doesn't want to fix or replace leaky undergrounf tanks, so they pull the plug on the issue rather than taking care of it! It's their fault, and now consumers pay the price for their actions:af: They half-assed something way back when, now it comes back to bite them, and who pays the price? We do. Typical big business logic

the automibile manufacturers have been screaming for the removal of mtbe from gasoline . it causes the pollution equipment to malfunction on cars & they must cover the repairs under warranty .
