This week end while in rout to the kids soft ball,
A nice looking late 90's mustang,White with blue stripes, spoilers, wheels and a thoaty exhaust making his V6( I think) sound very nice.
Well at the next stop light my with the wife behind the wheel of her Cadillac SRX(station wagon), the Mustang was next to us letting everyone hear just how nice his engine sounds, well the light turn green and he took off and I yelled to the wife that kid is trying to race you and make your car look bad well to my suprise the wife put her foot into, first I heard the Mustang thoating exhaust echo through our car, then the wifes car's exhaust sound off as it revs past 4000 on it way to 6000 RPM. then I hear the girls in the back saying "did you see the look on his face with his mouth open looking at us as we passed him."
It was a short race, nothing crazy so it made it a funny story with a happy ending.
Just him and I suprized by what had happened.but he did look a little dejected.

I had just the opposite problem as the Mustang guy. I have a really slick 85 Regal with a V6 (231) two barrel motor, small cowl hood, no vinyl top, and weld wheels. Shortly after having it painted me and a friend of mine (were both old) were just ridding around here in Bowling Green and almost every stop light we stopped at someone pulled up beside us and wanted to race. I had to tell my friend don't look over, this thing doesn't have enough motor to out run a scooter. As a result I never drive the car on the street but do bracket race it and have won a ton of money with it. My moto is (with this car) is going slow for dough. I race the one in my AVATAR when I want to go fast.

Going slo for dough is the way to go. I watched this old Valiant with a slant6 popper that looked like crap just sit there and beat everybody at the brackets. It must have been a 19 second car. If you are a 12 second guy you wait all day for that one. That guy beat everyone and got all the money.

Go slow for dough is so true.

Back in the late 80's early 90's there was an older women who used to race her mid 80's Caddy at the West Palm Beach track. The front wheel driver version with that 4-6-8 motor in it.

Anyway the thing ran 19 something over and over and over and over.
    She won all night long.

In early 90's there was a Ford minivan 4 banger auto that was just about Axing the tree every time at the old Darlington 1/8th mile track. out of field of over 80 cars (yep, I was up that high), running i believe 18's in 1/8th. Most were redlighting or breaking out. Patience is a virtue that not a lot of heads up racers have when bracketing against something THAT slow.he was down to final 4 or 8 when my tow truck arrived to take away my turbo regal to the dealer for yes another blown out powermaster switch. It aint no fun running down the strip and your brakes fail!!! Still have the pucker in the seat foam!! Used trans in first and parking brake to stop.

The best part was to hear the the kids in the back describe the look of disbelief on the drivers face.

Your incorrect. The best part was that you did it with your kids! Its hard for Mom and Dad to be cool (or at least admit it) by kids. Take advantage of it, it may not happen again for a long time. I'm a older guy so I know what I'm talking about.

I'm an older guy (55) too! So I know what you're talking about.

My kids (12 & 14 now) love to ride in the hot rods. They always have. My son when he was a toddler used to call the 72 Stage 1 with the headers and 3" exhaust "the wooggeda - wooggeda car".

The best story is when I put a mild stage motor in my wifes Buick Electra with a 200r4 out of a GN and a 4.10 posi corporate 10 bolt. The thing ran mid-high 13's all day on the Michelin white walls but was a killer on the street.

My 3 year old daughter in the car seat in the back seat loved to say "smoke the tires daddy" and I always obliged her. She loved waving bye-bye to whom ever was dumb enough to try that land yacht. I could pull a couple of car lengths on anything out of the hole.

Eventually after losing the hole shot a Corvette or good running LT-1 or LS-1 Camaro/Trans Am would slide by but by then I was backing out of it on the street because the kids were in the car.

Now they want their own hot rods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This one's not a Buick either. It was 1979 just outside Toronto Ontario.I was driving a three month old Caprice Classic 4 door sedan,on vacation, laden down with my ex-wife,two young kids and a car and trunk full of baggage and various assorted junk. The rear of the car was hunkered down,we looked like the Clampetts on the way to California. At a light up pulls next to me Mr. New Shiney BMW.It was one of the 3 series, brand new with a temporary sticker on the window.Seated beside this hot shot was his cutie ,beside me I had the ex-wife,itself a scary proposition at the best of times. She apparently done scared the hell out of him as when the light turned green Mr. BMW was off as fast as his new little Bimmer would let him.I had no Big Block Buick in the Chevy, but a pretty good working 350(1979 was the last year for a 350 in the sedan at least).I also had a posi and the big optional 3.08 rear end.Whooppee!I went past him so quick he didn't know what happened.I sedately was waiting for him at the next light.I had nothing more to prove.Mr. BMW wasn't finished though. He was so nerved up he had his poor little motor held hard to the floor for what seemed an eternity before the light went green again(it was a manual tranny car).I have never seen a guy totally refuse to look over at me with his motor singing beyond 6 grand.I and the kids were laughing so hard we couldn't stop,my ex was just as mad as Mr.BMW.I bet you he either traded it in the next day or blew it up trying to race big old 4 door sedans. It happened so long ago yet it was just one of those tiny little stories that seems as fresh now as then.Never to be forgotten.
